INTRODUCING MAISON MATECUMBE CABANA FLAT

Just off the southern Florida Keys between Key West and Key Largo is Islamorada, a small village comprised of five islands. The popular vacation destination features more than 17 miles of paradise complete with mouthwatering cuisine, epic adventures, and an array of water sports like kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding. 

POOL INFO: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there’s is no evidence that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can spread through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfecting with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the coronavirus in the water.

That being said, to ensure the health and safety of all around, we must make a few changes.   Currently, the Florida Governor suggests limiting groups to no more than 10 people.   Also, the CDC encourages all to practice social distancing of 6 feet and respect other people’s space.  

For the beach and lounge chairs, we suggest disinfecting before and after use.  Maison Matecumbe is a residential condo complex and not a resort, so it is up to the guest to self sanitize and use their best judgement.   Alternatively, guests can bring their own personal lounge chairs.  Personal lounge chairs are not to be left out and must be brought back in when not in use.

THINGS TO DO WHILE STAYING AT THE MAISON RESIDENCES

PICNIC & BEACH

While there are many fun and exciting adventures to be had in the Florida Keys, many come to the islands for a tropical experience. This means spending long days at the beach, lounging in the warm sand, and cooling off in the turquoise waters.

There are several beautiful beaches in the village, such as Anne’s Beach located at mile marker 73.5 on Islamorada’s Atlantic side. While this beach can get quite crowded at times, it offers a variety of amenities like picnic spots and a boardwalk.

At Mile Marker 80.2 you’ll find Holiday Isle Beach, conveniently located near many of the village’s popular restaurants. This is also where many fishing charters and eco tours can be reserved for those who seek adventure on the water.

FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY

While staying at the Maison Cabana Flat, take the time to learn about the area’s fascinating history. Take a walking tour of the Indian Key State Historic Site and learn about its former inhabitants.
If you only have time for a brief stop, consider viewing the Hurricane Monument, located off US 1. This important monument is dedicated to the hundreds who died in the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.

There are also other places in Islamorada where you can learn about Florida Keys history, such as the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center and the History of Diving Museum.

FOOD & DINING

There’s no shortage of incredible restaurants in Islamorada with menu items that appeal to all taste buds. Fish is, of course, common in the Keys with many restaurants serving fresh seafood. Consider grabbing a bite at the Islamorada Fish Company where the food is delicious and the atmosphere is cozy.

Robbie’s Marina is a local hot spot with an outdoor restaurant and a dock where you can feed hundreds of tarpons that swim near the shore. Other restaurants to try while staying at the Maison Cabana Flat include LoriLei Restaurant & Cabana Bar, Mangrove Mikes, Square Grouper, and Lazy Days.

SHOPPING

You won’t be disappointed with the selection of shops in Islamorada. If you’re interested in bringing home a piece of unique art from the islands, stop into BJ Royster Ocean Gallery, Island Décor, Old Road Gallery, or the Rain Barrel for a variety of artistic and unique items.

Islamorada also has many incredible shops and boutiques that house home décor, women’s and men’s clothing, jewelry, unique gifts, and so much more. Blue Marlin Jewelry, Casa Mar Village, Cheeca Lodge Signature Store, and Island Silver & Spice are just a few of the shops you’ll want to visit during your stay.

DAYTIME ENTERTAINMENT

Looking to fill your days in the Florida Keys with fun and entertainment? The village offers many exciting things to do for people of all ages. Head to Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, a fossilized coral reef that is packed with fossils that formed more than 125,000 years ago.

Nearby, vacationers will find the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Here you can connect with Florida’s natural surroundings and see the tropical habitat of crocodiles and other creatures like the Key Largo woodrat, Eastern indigo snake, and Burmese Python.

WATER SPORTS

With beautiful, clear water all around, it makes sense to want to spend some time partaking in water adventures. Bring your entire group along for a scenic boat tour around the island or book a private charter and spend a long afternoon drinking and having fun in the sun.

There’s no better way to experience what lies beneath the water’s surface than with a diving or snorkeling session. All skill levels are welcome to explore the underwater world where you could come face to face with puffers, sea turtles, and a large assortment of fish.

Islamorada has some of the clearest water in the world where divers and snorkelers can see vibrant coral reefs, schools of fish, and things lost long ago, like shipwrecks. Diving and snorkel trips can be fun for the entire family.

NATURE TOURS

The Florida Keys is home to many scenic locations and an abundance of wildlife. Choose a self-guided or professionally guided nature tour and spend a long afternoon sightseeing around the island.
Your guide will be knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife and fauna around Islamorada. During your tour, you’re bound to see a variety of creatures, such as crabs, birds, stingrays, and even small sharks. Nature tours can be found both on land and in the water.

OFFSHORE FISHING

Sport fishing offers vacationers the fun of the catch with something tasty to bring home. While staying at the Maison Cabana Flat, consider a half-day or full-day excursion that is packed with action.

Fish the blue waters of the Keys to catch tuna, mackerel, snapper, and various other fish that dwell deep in the water. Offshore fishing charters can be reserved year-round.

INSHORE FISHING

Inshore fishing is the most popular option in Islamorada with some of the most commonly sought-after species being tarpon, Mahi Mahi, permit, mangrove snapper, king mackerel, and many others.
There are many local companies that offer inshore fishing in or near Islamorada, such as Bud N’ Mary’s Marina, Sundance Sportfishing, Islamorada Fishing Charters, and Florida Keys Backcountry Fishing.

While the best season for fishing in this part of the Florida Keys is in the spring, warm temperatures in Islamorada make inshore fishing a possibility any time of year.

NIGHTLIFE

After the sun goes down, you’ll find that the Florida Keys continue to provide ample entertainment. Start your evening at the Florida Keys Brewing Company where you’ll discover a variety of beers, such as Iguana Bait and Honey Bottom Blonde. Each month, the brewing bar hosts live music shows performed by local artists.

The Holiday Isle Tiki Bar is also open late into the night and has become a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists. The Tiki Bar is where you’ll find the famous Rum Runner Cocktail. The establishment also hosts events and competitions throughout the year.
