Custer Gallatin National Forest

Custer Gallatin National Forest | Montana Wilderness Adventures

Beehive Basin Custer Gallatin National Forest

Overview

Nestled in the heart of southwest Montana, Gallatin National Forest is a stunning expanse of more than 2 million acres of rugged wilderness. Stretching from Bozeman to the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park, this forest is a gateway to adventure where crystal-clear rivers carve through alpine valleys and snow-capped peaks rise against endless Montana skies.

Established in 1899, Gallatin National Forest offers year-round recreation for explorers of all kinds. Whether you’re hiking to hidden waterfalls, fly-fishing in pristine streams, or skiing world-class slopes in Big Sky, the forest’s diversity of landscapes ensures unforgettable experiences in every season.

Location and Access

The forest lies primarily along the Gallatin Range and Absaroka Mountains, bordering Yellowstone National Park to the south. Major access points include Bozeman, Big Sky, Livingston, and West Yellowstone and each offering its own blend of mountain charm and outdoor access.

Interstate 90 provides convenient routes to the northern sections, while U.S. Highway 191 winds directly through the scenic Gallatin Canyon, following the wild and beautiful Gallatin River.

Things to Do in Gallatin National Forest

  • Hiking & Backpacking: Explore over 2,600 miles of trails, including routes through the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and Hyalite Canyon.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Spot elk, moose, mountain goats, grizzlies, and bald eagles in their natural habitat.
  • Fishing & Boating: Cast your line in the Gallatin, Madison, and Yellowstone Rivers, or paddle tranquil alpine lakes.
  • Winter Sports: Experience cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling or hit the slopes at nearby Big Sky Resort.
  • Camping & Cabins: Choose from hundreds of campsites or cozy U.S. Forest Service cabins under a canopy of stars.

Visitor Highlights

Don’t miss the Hyalite Reservoir near Bozeman, a favorite spot for kayaking and ice climbing, or the Gallatin River corridor, where scenes from “A River Runs Through It” were filmed. Adventurers can also venture toward the Spanish Peaks or Electric Peak for challenging backcountry treks.

Each area reveals a different side of Montana’s wild beauty from dense pine forests and open meadows to high alpine ridges dusted with snow even in summer.

Plan Your Visit

The best time to visit depends on your interests. Summer offers the widest access to hiking and fishing, while winter transforms the landscape into a snowy paradise for skiers and snow lovers. Always check current forest conditions, road closures, and wildlife advisories before your trip.

For detailed maps and permits, visit the official U.S. Forest Service website.
