Newport State Park

Newport State Park Travel Guide – Door County’s Wilderness Escape

Newport State Park Sign Door County Wisconsin

Tucked away on the northeastern tip of the Door Peninsula, Newport State Park is Wisconsin’s only designated wilderness park. Known for its remote beauty, dark skies, and unspoiled shoreline, Newport offers a completely different experience from Door County’s busier tourist towns. This is the place to go when you’re craving solitude, nature, and a true “up north” adventure.

Newport State Park in Ellison Bay is Door County’s only designated wilderness park, offering 30 miles of hiking trails, 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and rustic backpack-in campsites. Recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, it’s one of the best stargazing destinations in the Midwest. Perfect for hikers, campers, and nature lovers, Newport is the quiet side of Door County at its most wild and beautiful.

If you’re looking for the quiet side of Door County, away from crowds, shopping, and busy beaches, Newport State Park is your escape. Whether you’re hiking along the shoreline, camping under the stars, or just enjoying a picnic with panoramic lake views, Newport offers a rare chance to experience Door County’s wild, untouched beauty.

Highlights

Wilderness Camping

Newport is the only park in Wisconsin where all campsites are backpack-in only. Campsites are rustic, private, and accessible only by foot or bike, giving campers a true backcountry experience.

Newport offers 17 backpack-in campsites, each spaced out for privacy. Sites include a fire ring, food locker, and tent area, but no vehicle access—expect to hike in 1–2 miles. Pit toilets are available nearby, and campers must pack in their own water or filter from natural sources. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially in summer and fall.

Dark Sky Park

Recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, Newport is one of the best places in the Midwest for stargazing and astrophotography.

Newport’s remote location and lack of light pollution make it a premier stargazing spot. On clear nights, visitors can see the Milky Way, meteor showers, and even the Northern Lights at times. Bring a blanket, telescope, or camera tripod and settle in for a breathtaking celestial show.

Natural Shoreline

The park features over 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, ranging from rocky bluffs to quiet pebble beaches. The Newport shoreline is about quiet reflection and natural beauty, a place to hear the waves, watch the stars, and experience Door County in its wildest form.

Hiking Trails

More than 30 miles of trails wind through forests, meadows, and shoreline, perfect for day hikes and wildlife viewing. Many trails interconnect, so it’s easy to customize a hike from 1 to 7 miles or more.
Europe Bay Trail – A scenic hike through forests and along Europe Lake.

Hotz Trail – A peaceful loop through hardwoods and meadows, great for birdwatching.

Newport Trail – Connects multiple parts of the park for a longer trek.

Shoreline Trail – Runs along Lake Michigan, offering dramatic views and access to remote beach areas.

Fern Trail - The Fern Trail is one of Newport State Park’s peaceful forest paths, named for the thick carpets of ferns that line the trail in spring and summer. It’s a relatively easy walk, perfect for families, birdwatchers, and anyone looking to enjoy the quiet beauty of the park’s wilderness interior.
