Property Information
The Hans Hedemann Honu Hale (turtle house) is in the
countryside on the North Shore of Oahu. Hans
Hedemann surfed professionally for 17 years on the
international Pro World Tour, and now owns the most
popular surf school in Hawaii called “Hans Hedemann
Surf.” So it’s no wonder his 5-bedroom luxury vacation
rental is located on Laniakea Beach! Known to locals as
“Lania”, this is one of the North Shore’s best surfing
locations. From the wrap-around lanai you can view the
sets of waves coming in daily. This beach is also
famous for the multitudes of sea turtles that come to
the shores of Laniakea Beach.

Laniakea, meaning “wide sky,” is the name of a fresh
water spring surfacing among the rocks on the shore
below the beachfront homes, its location having once
been marked by a sign until the 1970s that said
“Laniakea.” In November 1955, veteran surfers Pat
Curren, Buzzy Trent, Peter Van Dyke, Fred Van Dyke,
George Downing, and Wally Froiseth went to an
unnamed surf site off the west end of the intersection
of Pohakuloa Way and Kamehameha Highway. Bud
Browne, surfing’s first movie producer, was with them.
The waves were huge and breaking so far out that
Browne started searching for an elevated vantage point
for his camera. Behind the homes he found an old, 3-
story, steel-frame observation tower that had held an
anti-aircraft gun during World War II, where he climbed
to the top and started filming. Afterwards, the seven
men discussed possible names for the new spot.
Browne mentioned the sign he had seen near the tower
from where he had filmed. They all agreed to name it
“Laniakea” and, today, it is one of the North Shore’s
famous surf sites.

Laniakea Beach is a great beach on which to set up
camp and relax, but the best thing about it is the sea
turtles. These sea turtles (known as honu) come close to
shore to feed on the seaweed growing on the rocks.
Sea turtles can live to 80 years of age and because they
are cold-blooded, like all reptiles, they sometimes haul
themselves up on the beach to bask in the warm
Hawaiian sun.

The 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom Honu Hale is fully
furnished with pristine linens and contemporary
appliances. This 2-story beach house is surrounded by
a gorgeous rockwall with tropical plants. The Honu
Hale has windows in every room allowing for plenty of
light, trade winds, and views from every corner. The
common living areas offer tons of room, and the
gourmet kichen has stainless steel appliances and
everything one would need to cook a gourmet dinner.

Come stay in this beautiful Honu Hale for weeks at a
time with your friends or loved ones for a perfect
tropical getaway in Hawaii. The location is about 40
minutes from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and
Waikiki, where the tranquility of the countryside of the
North Shore feels like the Hawaii of yesteryear. You can
sign up at any Hans Hedemann Surf School locations to
take a surf lesson from the best instructors on the
island. Just pack your swim suit, sunscreen, and
camera. You won’t want to miss out on this Hawaiian
experience!
