Words can not express the beauty of this house and its setting. In the 1920's, La Jolla had a building boom where many wealthy people came to build homes around the ocean and up in the beautiful hills of Mt. Soledad. It no longer became just a summer community but a place to raise families in elegant year-round homes.
This house is a prime example of Old World Elegance from the living room to the outdoor patio where one can sit and enjoy the outside wrapped in the quiet of the hills. The neighborhood is so exquisite that is was chosen for the movie TRAFFIC.
In 1960 the daughter of a Vice Admiral and widow a Naval Doctor settled here to raise her only child. She surrounded herself with the things collected from four generations of travels of Navy living. The house still is decorated with this sense of history and is a rare treat.
The living room has been redone for family-friendly enjoyment. Leather couches and a plasma TV make it a great place to hang out. There is a formal dining room, and an informal dining room off of the kitchen. A sliding glass door opens the house up to mingle between the sunroom and the 800-square-foot patio. The kitchen is redone in Spanish tile and updated for any modern cook.
The master bedroom has a king sized bed and full bathroom. The second bedroom has a queen bed. A third bedroom has two twin beds. A second full bathroom is just down the hall from the bedrooms. Two roll away beds can be used for additional sleeping in either the sunroom or living room. All beds come with top-of-the-line new mattresses.
The grounds are incredible. 10,000 square feet of gardens. The large patio has great furniture and surrounded by eight-foot walls covered with roses. A fire pit makes the nights magical, quiet except for the birds and quiet conversations with friends. A pathway takes you on a trip through a rosebush-lined path to another terrace.
Here you smell the flowers and hear the water fountains while enjoying another quiet sitting area. The property is child-friendly, pet-friendly, family-friendly. It is also available for formal occasions including wedding receptions catered by some of La Jolla's finest restaurants.
Available for year round use. Please inquire. Open for less than weekly rents.

"I rented the La Jolla property for my wedding in October 2006. I have nothing but good things to say about this place! The house was beautifully furnished and the outside grounds were gorgeous. It felt like I was staying in someone's home and did not have the sterile hotel feel. The house was just a short distance to the ocean. The manager was great to deal with. She promptly returned all my calls and really made the extra effort to ensure that everything was alright. This location played a large part in making my wedding reception magical. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone." -- KC, San Diego, CA
"Great house, very cozy and relaxing. History is a treat and all the photos and gems as well. Thank-you!" -- DO, Huntington Beach, CA
"Thank-you for a lovely stay!" -- CU Family, Cleveland Heights, OH
"Wonderful home. Great memories!" -- C Family, Scottsdale, AZ
"Beautiful place for a getaway weekend. The kids and the dog loved the 'Secret Garden!'" -- M Family, Los Angeles, CA
"Staying at Casa Ladera was like walking through an enchanted looking glass into a world of elegance, tranquility, history and magic. I loved the time I spent there this past fall. From the very moment I entered the 'Casa' I felt felt at home and yet pampered at the same time. The white bathrobes were a nice touch. The sunsets were phenomenal and the gardens simply gorgeous. I made a point of rising just before sunrise almost every day just so I could drink in the view of the lower terrace from my window before the contrasting light of the rising sun set in. The privacy and yet close proximity to the Village of La Jolla was perfect for us. Casa Ladera truly is an amazing vacation rental." -- WH, Boston, MA
"This house is a gem of California from an earlier and more gracious era. My wife and just spent our 23rd anniversary there, and found it a delight. The architecture is pre-war Early California Mission style, with typical tile roof, hardwood floors, and stucco exterior and plaster interior walls. Decor is a well-executed eclectic blend of European and Chinese antiques, with modern conveniences like plasma tvs in every bedroom. We counted three separate levels of gardens, and each seems hidden from the others, so you have the experience of discovery around every corner.
The house is laid out very well for entertaining, with many natural and private gathering places, and even with maximum occupancy, no one will feel crowded. There always seems to be a place to hide if you want privacy. The kitchen is small but modern, and the cupboards are stocked with enough very good dishes and stemware to entertain a small army. What stands out about this house is the sense of peace and graciousness it seems to exude. This is not the sort of house to invite your hard drinking friends and turn up the music. This is a retreat to hide away if you want rest and quiet medicine for your soul in tastefully beautiful surroundings. My wife and I unreservedly recommend it."
-- SS, Tustin, CA
