Old Baldy Lighthouse and the Smith Island Museum
Step Back in Time at North Carolina’s Oldest Lighthouse
Bald Head Island may be known for its unspoiled beaches and car-free charm, but no visit is complete without a trip to Old Baldy Lighthouse and the Smith Island Museum of History. Towering above the tree line since 1817, Old Baldy stands as the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. Though it no longer guides ships, it offers something equally powerful: a portal into the past.
The lighthouse rises 110 feet and features 108 steps leading to the top. Visitors are invited to climb to the observation deck, where panoramic views of the Cape Fear River, Atlantic Ocean, and island marshes await. The experience is especially popular among history lovers, families, and anyone looking for that perfect vacation photo. Adjacent to the lighthouse sits the restored keeper’s cottage, which houses the Smith Island Museum. Inside, exhibits trace the island’s maritime history, shipwrecks, Civil War involvement, and daily life of lighthouse keepers who once lived here.
A Centerpiece of Island History and Culture
What makes Old Baldy so special isn't just its age but it’s the way it represents the evolution of Bald Head Island itself. From colonial shipping routes to Civil War defenses to modern-day preservation efforts, the lighthouse has stood watch through every chapter. The museum does an excellent job weaving together these stories through interactive displays, original artifacts, and rotating exhibits. Seasonal events like living history weekends and kid-friendly programs add even more value for visiting families and tour groups.
One especially unique aspect is the location itself that can be reached only by ferry, Bald Head Island feels like a world apart. That isolation has helped preserve both the natural beauty and the historic integrity of landmarks like Old Baldy. For those wanting to make a day of it, picnic spots and shady paths are available on the museum grounds, and golf carts can be rented nearby to explore the rest of the island.
Plan Your Visit
Old Baldy and the Smith Island Museum are typically open six days a week from spring through fall, with modified hours in the off-season. Entry includes museum admission and access to climb the lighthouse. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, and bring your camera because the view from the top is one of the best on the island. Tickets can be purchased on-site or in advance at Old Baldy Lighthouse.
If you're planning a vacation to Bald Head Island, this is one stop you absolutely don’t want to miss. It’s more than a photo op, it’s a hands-on journey through the layered history of coastal North Carolina.
