Bald Head Island Conservancy
Located at the southeastern tip of North Carolina, the Bald Head Island Conservancy is a leading institution in coastal preservation and environmental education. Established in 1983, the Conservancy is dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier island ecosystems, making it a unique stop for eco-conscious travelers and families alike.
One of the Conservancy’s best-known programs is its long-running Sea Turtle Protection Program. From May to October, visitors can participate in guided “Turtle Walks,” where trained staff and volunteers provide insight into nesting loggerhead sea turtles. These evening tours offer a rare opportunity to witness turtle nesting or hatchling releases under careful protection protocols.
Beyond turtles, the Conservancy houses a modern Education and Research Center featuring exhibits on the island’s ecology, ongoing coastal research projects, and interactive displays for all ages. It’s a great spot to learn about Bald Head Island’s unique dune systems, maritime forest, and estuarine environments.
Visitors can stop by the Turtle Central Gift Shop, which supports conservation efforts and carries eco-friendly products, books, and locally inspired gifts. The Conservancy also offers nature tours, hands-on children’s programs, and guest lectures throughout the year and many of which are free or low-cost.
Open year-round, the Bald Head Island Conservancy is more than a museum or visitor center, it’s an active contributor to environmental stewardship. If you're planning a visit to Bald Head Island, it’s well worth a stop for both education and inspiration.
