The Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate | Tours, Gardens, Inn & Winery in Asheville

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville North Carolina

The Biltmore Estate is Asheville’s most famous attraction and a destination in its own right. Commissioned by George Vanderbilt and completed in 1895, the 250-room chateau is the largest privately owned home in the United States. From its ornate banquet hall and sprawling library to hidden marvels like the indoor swimming pool and bowling alley, the house offers an intimate look at Gilded Age life at a scale few other places in the country can match.

But Biltmore is more than its mansion. The estate’s 8,000 acres of grounds, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, unfold into formal gardens, wooded trails, and rolling meadows. Spring brings bursts of tulips and azaleas, summer is fragrant with roses, autumn blankets the property in fiery mountain foliage, and winter transforms the mansion into one of the most elaborate holiday displays in the South.

The Inn on Biltmore Estate

Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and George Vanderbilt’s expansive estate, The Inn on Biltmore Estate offers a refined, resort-style experience for guests who want to stay immersed in the grandeur of Biltmore beyond a day visit.

The Inn feels like an extension of the mansion itself - elegant, traditional interiors with rich woodwork, classic Southern furnishings, and attentive service. Rooms and suites feature plush bedding, marble bathrooms, and large windows framing the rolling hills of the estate. For an extra touch of indulgence, suites on the upper floors provide panoramic views that stretch to Mount Pisgah.

Dining is another highlight. The Dining Room at The Inn serves seasonal menus with estate-raised beef, local trout, and produce sourced from Western North Carolina farms. Breakfast is a lingering affair, best enjoyed on the terrace when the morning mist still hangs in the valley. Afternoon wine tastings and evening cocktails extend the sense of leisure.

Guests have access to the estate’s activities from carriage rides and guided hikes to river rafting and tours of the gardens. A heated outdoor pool overlooks the mountains, while the spa offers massages and wellness treatments for those seeking relaxation after a day of exploring.

The Winery and Village

After touring the house, many visitors make their way to Antler Hill Village, where the Biltmore Winery offers complimentary tastings of estate wines ranging from crisp whites to bold reds. Nearby, shops, a creamery, and restaurants such as Cedric’s Tavern and The Bistro, showcase estate-raised meats, local produce, and a relaxed place to linger. The village often features live music, demonstrations, and seasonal events, adding to the atmosphere.
