Emerald Coast Science Center
The Emerald Coast Science Center at 31 SW Memorial Parkway in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is a nonprofit interactive science museum dedicated to inspiring curiosity and learning in visitors of all ages. Founded in 1989 originally as the FOCUS Center and re-established under its current name in 2001, the Science Center has spent more than three decades fostering STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education in Okaloosa County and throughout Northwest Florida. Its mission centers on creating a scientifically engaged community through hands-on discovery and public outreach.
Within its approximately 8,000 square feet of indoor space and two acres of outdoor property, the center features over 45 interactive exhibits that explore a wide range of scientific principles. Guests can try their hand at robotics challenges, experiment with physics and engineering displays, play on the sciPad interactive learning environment, and explore natural phenomena through color, light, and space exhibits. A standout attraction is the sciPad featuring SMALLab Learning™, which places visitors in a room-sized interactive “playing field” for collaborative problem-solving.
In addition to traditional exhibits, the center incorporates live animal encounters, chemistry demonstrations, and themed programming such as Planetarium Nights and STEAM workshops that enrich the visitor experience. Outdoor attractions include nature trails, outdoor science activities, and themed exhibits like a dino dig pit and a marine exploration display that appeal to both young children and adults.
Beyond general admission, the Emerald Coast Science Center hosts field trips, birthday parties, homeschool academies, and mobile planetarium experiences that extend learning beyond its walls. Its commitment to educational outreach is evident in programs designed to align with school curricula and support science instruction in local classrooms. Whether you’re a family looking for an engaging day of exploration or a student eager to dive deeper into hands-on science, the center offers a playful and informative environment for discovery.
