Things to Do in Naples Florida

For lovers of outdoor attractions, Naples is the perfect base to set out and explore some of the most breathtaking areas of natural beauty in the United States. It is not only the flora and fauna that will have visitors mesmerized but also the sheer wonder of the varied natural landscape to be found across the state. It is a place that almost demands a social media worthy film roll and time spent appreciating the sights and sounds provided by one of the greatest orchestral conductors of all time, Mother Nature. A Naples Florida travel guide would not be complete without highlighting this greatest attraction.

Naples is a place where you can kayak with manatees in the morning, sip champagne at sunset, and still feel the pulse of untamed Florida. The pace is yours to set, lounge on the pier, chase adventure in the swamps, or shop ‘til you drop on Fifth. It’s pricier than some Gulf spots, but the value lies in its variety and 280 days of sun don’t hurt either.

Below you will find a list of Naples Florida Things To Do that just scratches the surface of just why Naples is such a rewarding and special travel destination.

Big Cypress National Preserve

Spanning 729,000 acres, this park is a nature lovers' delight. It is especially renowned by birdwatchers who can find migratory birds overwintering in the swamp during the colder months of the year that afflict the rest of the United States and other parts of the world. Bird lovers will be delighted with the chance to spot the wonderful Snowbird among seasonal travelers. However, the area is also home to species such as the Wood Stork, the Mangrove Cuckoo, the Roseate Spoonbill, Florida Scrub-Jay, Mottled Duck, and Bachman’s Sparrow - the list goes on and on.

The park is also home to the elusive Florida Panther and the endangered American Alligator. Those interested in the beauty of wildflowers will be delighted to learn that the park is also one of only two places on Earth that plays host to the Ghost Orchid.

Hop on an Airboat and spend some time exploring the swamp, its wonderful wildlife, and the towering Cypress Trees that shelter the inhabitants of its vibrant ecosystem. This is a destination that does not see the huge numbers of visitors that attracts those using Naples as a base - and that is, of course, America's largest sub-tropical ecosystem, The Florida Everglades. Here visitors can enjoy sightings of manatees and American crocodiles. Florida Panthers are also residents of the Swamps.

The Naples Botanical Garden

Plant lovers should also take care not to skip the wonders of the 170-acre Naples Botanical Garden. This 170-acre world-class garden paradise that showcases plants from around the globe. Here carefully cultivated tropical gardens vie for attention with lovingly restored natural habitats. It is the perfect destination for a family day out and about in Naples. The Garden combines an educational experience with fascinating exhibits and information on ongoing conservation efforts.

Visitor Center, Café, Gift Shop, and a Butterfly House. Walking through themed gardens like the Asian Garden, Brazilian Garden, Florida Garden, and Caribbean Garden. There are also seasonal events and educational programs.

Those in search of indoor destinations are also spoiled for choice when in Naples, aside from the simple joys of those who explore its streets and many retail establishments, entertainment options, art and culture attractions, and fabulous dining destinations. Naples has a reputation for being stylish, sophisticated, and fun. There's always an attraction worth exploring for both young and old - and families in search of some quality time.

Naples Pier

The Naples Pier is the city’s heartbeart, a historic landmark where fishing, dolphin-watching, and sunset-gazing converge. It’s free, iconic, and quintessentially Naples. Originally built in 1888, the Naples Pier is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. It serves as a popular spot for fishing, with no fishing license required. The pier offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico and is a prime location for watching sunsets.

Stretching 1,000 feet into the Gulf since 1888, this pier at 25 12th Avenue South has weathered hurricanes and rebuilds, its wooden planks now a stage for locals and visitors alike. Fish for mackerel with a $5 daily permit, or just lean on the rail as dolphins arc through the waves, sightings are almost daily. The beach here, Naples Municipal, is wide and soft, perfect for shelling (look for junonia!) or a barefoot stroll.

Sunset is the main event ocurring around 6:30 p.m. in winter, 8 p.m. in summer with the sky ablaze, often with a green flash if conditions align. No cost, ample parking ($3/hour nearby), and concessions for snacks. Open 24/7, though the vibe peaks at dusk. Bring a blanket and a drink, BYOB’s fine and settle in for nature’s show.

Gordon River Greenway

A preserved natural area in the heart of Naples, offering trails alongside the Gordon River. Paved pathways, observation decks, and kayak launch sites. Walking, jogging, cycling, kayaking, and bird watching.

Vanderbilt Beach

Vanderbilt Beach, a bit north, draws a lively crowd with its proximity to resorts like the Ritz-Carlton, while Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park dazzles with its undeveloped beauty of sea oats, loggerhead turtle nests, and kayak launches into estuaries. These shores aren’t just pretty; they’re alive with ospreys overhead, crabs scuttling underfoot, and fish schools glinting in the surf. Bring a shelling bag (Sanibel’s got nothing on Naples’ bounty) and sunscreen, there’s no escaping that Florida sun.

Everglades Airboat Tour from Naples

Naples is the western gateway to the Everglades, and its natural offerings rival any beach day. Naples sits at the Everglades’ edge, and an airboat ride is the ultimate way to experience this UNESCO World Heritage wilderness - fast, loud, and teeming with life and exploration.

Operators like Everglades Excursions, 45 minutes from Naples launch from spots like Everglades City, skimming across sawgrass prairies and mangrove tunnels. Expect alligators sunning on banks, herons taking flight, and maybe a manatee’s snout breaking the surface. Boats seat 6-20, zipping at 40 mph with ear protection’s provided, and guides narrate the ecology and history (think Seminole roots and airboat origins). Tours run 1-2 hours, morning departures catching peak wildlife activity. Wear closed shoes and long sleeves to protect from bugs bites and book ahead in winter. It’s a thrilling immersion into Florida’s wild soul, just close enough to Naples for a half-day trip.

Here, along the plam-lined street one finds more than 20 restaurants (more on that later) and some exclusive boutiques that will reward browsing. The visitor will also be able to peruse fabulous antique stores with American and European goods, great art galleries, incredible bookstores, and a selection of delightful delicatessens.

Dining and Cuisine in Naples

We now get to a section of this abridged guide (there is simply so much to see and do that it is beyond the scope of this Naples Florida travel guide) that deserves thousands of words - the Naples culinary scene. Florida is well-known for the quality of its fresh seafood and its Cuban-inspired cuisine, but there is so much more. Here are some attractions that quite simply should not be missed.

Dining here is an event. The Bay House serves gulf shrimp with a view of the Cocohatchee River, while Sea Salt on Third Street South elevates seafood with truffle accents. For a taste of Old Naples, Osteria Tulia on Fifth offers rustic Italian such as handmade pasta and wood-fired octopus while Campiello’s courtyard buzzes with romance. Budget travelers can hit The Bowl for açai bowls or grab a bushwacker (a boozy milkshake) at a beachside bar. With over 700 restaurants, Naples caters to every palate, from luxe to laid-back.

5th Avenue has already been mentioned many times with a passing reference to the number of restaurants and shops that can be found on the street. But special mention must go to 'The French Brasserie Rustique', known to local gourmands simply as 'The French'. This dining destination is modeled on the classic french bistro and the offerings by Chef Vincenzo Betulia are inspired. Great for brunch, but dinner guests should make a point of trying the 'Plancha Seared Tuna Au Poivre'.

In the mood for a sumptuous tropically inspired menu? Reserve your table at 'Baleen' with is on the grounds of the La Playa Beach and Golf Resort. Take in the incredible views over the water and enjoy a cocktail while bathed in the rays of the setting sun. Naples has so many quality dining options that they are almost too numerous to list. Visitors can enjoy world-class cuisines inspired by destinations across the globe. Dining out is an experience not to be missed.

For a wilder fix, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, 30 miles northeast, offers a 2.25-mile boardwalk through ancient cypress forests and some trees over 500 years old. Alligators bask, wood storks wade, and the air hums with cicadas. Closer to town, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center rehabilitates injured wildlife like pelicans and bobcats and runs electric boat tours up the Gordon River, revealing manatees and mangroves.

Culture

Naples punches above its weight culturally. Fifth Avenue South, the city’s glitzy spine, is a parade of galleries, theaters, and eateries. Artis—Naples, home to The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, showcases everything from Chihuly glass to Broadway tours, check the schedule. Tin City, a waterfront relic of the 1920s fishing trade, now brims with quirky shops and casual seafood spots like Riverwalk, where stone crab claws are harvested sustainably from October to May are a rite of passage.

History and Hidden Gems

Naples’ past whispers through its present. The Naples Depot Museum, in a 1927 train station, chronicles the city’s rail boom with vintage cars and artifacts (free entry, donations welcome). Palm Cottage, built in 1895, offers guided tours through its pioneer-era rooms, a snapshot of life before the condos came. For a wild card, the Revs Institute revs up car buffs with 112 rare vehicles from Porsches to racecars across three floors (Tuesdays/Thursdays/Saturdays only).

The Wharf at Orange Beach, a short drive away, sneaks into this guide for its Ferris wheel and amphitheater vibes where Naples folks often pop over for concerts or a change of pace. Back in town, the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens blends botanical beauty with giraffes and a primate cruise, while Keewaydin Island, an 8-mile barrier reachable only by boat, offers pristine sands and food boats like In the Pink for a quirky lunch stop.

When to Visit

The ideal time to visit Naples is between the months of March and May when the temperatures are ideal for holiday making and fun in the warm waters of the Gulf. It's at this time of year when the weather is fine - and visitors are not subject to the price hikes that are part and parcel of the Florida December to February experience (the peak winter holiday season). Rental accommodation is also easier to find. For those who want to avoid the crowds and the higher temperatures/humidity of the peak season, September to October is also a great option.

Fly into RSW (40 minutes away) or drive from Miami (2 hours via I-75). Rent a car because Naples sprawls, and public transit’s thin. Stay beachfront at the Edgewater or Inn on Fifth for walkability, or opt for a condo rental. Summer’s hot and wet, but cheaper; winter (December-April) is peak season to book early. Pack light layers, water shoes for shelling, and a camera, the Gulf’s green flash at sunset is a rare treat. Naples awaits, a slice of paradise with grit and grace.

Where to Stay

The range of options available to those choosing to vacation in Naples is almost without compare. Those visiting can choose the luxury resort option, beachside hotel, or opt for the bed and breakfast experience, there are even camping options to explore. However, those who want to make the most of their time in Naples will usually opt for a vacation rental accommodation. Find Rentals has a vast selection of vacation rental properties that will meet the individual requirements of holiday makers, be they in a family group, a couple in search of a romantic rental where privacy is important, or a fun getaway with friends.

There are magnificent condos and apartments overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. The choice of the number of rooms is almost unlimited, as are the various floor plans and sizes - and the condo amenities. Visitors to Naples will also have an incredible choice of other properties such as luxury villas, many of them services and featuring all the mod-cons and amenities to make any vacation especially memorable. There are also family-style homes (many dog-friendly) that offer exceptional value and are within walking distance of popular Naples attractions.

If you are planning your next vacation put Naples, Florida on the bucket list. It offers an unforgettable experience - and great accommodation options.

Florida, the Sunshine State

Florida has long been a favorite destination for American and international travelers. The popularity of Florida as a vacation destination began in the 1920s when land speculation increased public awareness of the state as a vacation paradise Today, Florida continues to attract property investors and the ever-increasing number of quality rental options for holiday makers is at least part of the attraction, but this state has so much to offer that rentals are never vacant for long.

Florida's nickname is 'The Sunshine State' and that offers an insight into just one of the reasons that it attracts so many visitors during the winter months when much of the U.S. is exposed to temperatures that call for heavy coats, anti-slip footwear, and insulated gloves. With an average of 237 days of sunshine per year, this is a state that seems tailor-made for outdoor activities and it has attractions that allow visitors to take advantage of those sun-drenched days.

That is not to say that Florida does not boast numerous activities that take place indoors, in fact, the list of attractions seems to go on and on. In fact, choosing just where to visit in Florida can be a challenge. However, it's a challenge that can be overcome by setting your sights on spending lots of time in Naples, Florida.
