Property Description

The name of this one-bedroom, one full bath condo suggests the most persistent legend of Key West: that vacationers come for a week and stay a lifetime. Located in the prestigious gated Truman Annex community, this unit is the perfect place to try out island living for yourself. From its fabulous second story balcony, you will look out over white picket fences, a gleaming swimming pool, exotic birds strolling the garden-like grounds, and the sunlight streaking through amazing varieties of tropical foliage. If you, like the legend, decide to make paradise your home and stay for at least seven years, you'll no longer be "in training"-you'll have graduated to "Fresh Water Conch."

The entry to this residence is through a white picket fence, past bushes of blooming bougainvillea and waving palms, and onto the front porch. Immediately inside the front door a hardwood staircase leads up to the second story. At the top and to the right your eye goes immediately beyond the living area out through French doors to a generous open-air balcony. Amenities here include chaise loungers, and patio table with umbrella and four chairs. In one corner are a handful of brightly colored pool noodles. Standing at the railing enjoying your treehouse view, you will see the large, temperature-controlled pool just one story down and steps away.

From the balcony, stepping back through the French doors will take you into the intimate living room that's flooded with daylight. The deep-seated, teal-blue couch is comfy, converts into a queen sleeper, and is perfectly positioned for watching TV or movies on the flatscreen. Its blue hue carries through the residence as an accent color, creating a professional design aesthetic. Of course there's high-speed wireless internet, cable, and a DVD player. Below a cooling ceiling fan, a coffee table stands ready to hold your beverage, guidebook, newspaper, or whatever pleases you. Across the lovely white tile flooring, a rattan armchair adds more seating. That same wall has another set of elegant French doors that swing open to reveal the bedroom. You can enter the bedroom from the hallway closer to the kitchen as well.

The dining area with glass-top table and four chairs occupies open space to the left of the entrance stairs, conveniently close to the L-shaped kitchen. The kitchen is compact and provides everything you need to make coffee or prepare meals-appliances, dishes, pots and pans. Perhaps buy some fresh grouper at the Eaton Street Seafood Market or sirloin at Fausto's Food Palace on Fleming Street for dinner. A round window over the sink adds architectural interest and natural illumination.

Other conveniences include a stacked washer/dryer near the full bath and the queen bedroom. This master sleeping room has multiple windows framed by teal drapes. One window frames the inviting view of the balcony and beyond. A ceiling fan whirrs above, circulating air and adding tropical ambience to the room. A large closet offers plenty of space for hanging items and two chests of drawers open to hold folded items. Several lamps provide light for night time. For the finishing touch, an area rug adds interest to the white tile floor and provides a soft surface for bare feet.

Once you've unpacked and applied sunscreen, it's time to explore. Leave your car in its reserved space because world famous Duval Street is only two blocks away. Stroll through the manicured landscaping, verdant palms, and interconnecting pathways that give your Truman Annex neighborhood its park-like atmosphere. Then head out through the wrought iron privacy gate to find yourself immersed in the sights and sounds of Duval's tourist attractions. Check out the tours, museums, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you're interested in watersports, there's all kinds: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few. Don't miss the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, boutiques, and especially the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon. After sunset, stick around for the festivities that follow.

If the arts interest you, you've come to the right town for music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. If you like beaches, your accommodations are close to a favorite locals' beach, Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. Bathrooms, showers, picnic tables are also available. If you get hungry beachside, there's even a snack bar serving up sandwiches, cold beverages, beach sundries, and souvenirs. When you've had enough beach, you can explore the adjacent Civil War era fort, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center will help make sure you don't miss anything.

My husband and I stayed in this condo for one week. The condo was very clean, quiet and had everything we needed. It was just steps away from the pool area. There are some very good restaurants within walking distance; Santiago's Bodega, The Moondog Cafe and The Blue Macaw to name a few. We also used "The Duvall Loop", a free bus, which stops close to the condo and loops around Duvall St. A bus comes about every 15 minutes throughout most of the day and runs until midnight, I believe.

This was the 4th or 5th time renting through Historic Hideaways, but the first time at this unit. Tim at Historic Hideaways has always been professional and easy to work with. This condo unit was perfect and we will be staying here again. Big plus is that it is close to Ft. Zach and also downtown Duval St., but far enough away that it is always quiet. The unit was clean, well stocked and very comfortable, we had no issues whatsoever.

This is the second time we have rented this condo unit in Truman Annex. It is very convenient to Duval Street and within walking distance of many restaurants, bars and attractions but is in a very quiet area of the Annex. It is the perfect size for 2 adults although it can sleep 4. We like that it has a large private balcony/deck where we can drink our coffee in the morning and lounge/sun bathe in the afternoon. It also has all the amenities of a home which is nice.Added bonus is the assigned parking space and close proximity to the community pool.

Me and my husband stayed in The Conch in Training apartment for a week - we absolutely loved everything about the accommodation. What you see in the photos on the website is exactly what you get but with more added - The decor is lovely, the Bed provides a perfect nights sleep and the kitchen might be small but its got all you need to enjoy a self catering experience. Historic Hideaways have thought of everything to make your stay excellent - tourist info, books to read, great air conditioning and a Balcony to relax on with overhead fans to keep cool. We were so happy - everything was perfect. The complex itself is beautifully maintained and totally secure - the pool area is spotless with plenty of loungers to help you relax. Location wise it is 5 minutes walk to Duval street where all the action is in Key West but its so quiet in the Shipyard complex that you never get disturbed by noise. You can walk through to Fort Zachary Taylor and the beach - we did this and we were surprised to find a beautiful childrens play area with water slides and fun things to do overlooking the sea - this was a great place to sit and chill out with the sea breeze on a hot day. Well, if youre reading this review I cant recommend this fantastic apartment too much - go enjoy the Hideaway Happiness of it all. We hope to return in The future.

From the initial enquirer Tim looked after our booking excellently. We met him at the office on the Monday morning of our stay and he was very friendly and interested in how we were getting on - he provided exceptional customer care. The apartment was amazing- we loved everything about it. Its exactly as presented on the website - all equipment was working and in good condition and the bed was very comfortable. The unit has a Fabulous terrace/balcony that we enjoyed using very much - it overlooks the pool which is 1 minute walk. The area at the pool has lots of sun beds and tables and chairs. The whole complex is clean and well maintained. Location wise you are a 3 minute walk up to Duval street and about 8 minutes to The Ernest Hemingway House. We loved relaxing on our balcony and the location of the apartment - We highly recommend this unit as a Terrific place to enjoy Key West from. We hope to return in The future. Thank you to Historic Hideaways.

Positives-Location of the unit was great! The unit was clean and nicely kept. Our favorite part was the large porch! Check in and out at Historic Hideaways was very easy and convenient! Negatives-Having only 2 bed pillows-definitely need at least 4. Would have loved to have a Keurig coffee maker in the unit-no need for filters and ground coffee then but this wouldn't keep me from booking this unit again. All-in-all, we loved the Conch in Training unit and would definitely consider booking again!

There really was not anything missing, but we like to have a tv in the bedroom and are used to a king bed. But, we got along just fine. Would definitely recommend the unit and the rental agency.

Very happy with the apartment, the location was excellent! Very close to everything going on in Key West, but very quiet too! The apartment was very clean with lots of bath & pool towels & most of the things we required to make our say comfortable. The only thing that would have been nice would be some wine glasses as well as the tumbler style. Also a dishwasher (comment from my husband as he did most of it!).

Service through Historic Hideaways was very efficient and professional. Property location was great - two blocks from Duval Street, convenient but quiet and secure. Loved the property - second floor, perfect size for two people, had all the amenities we wanted including an abundant size deck with good privacy and direction for sun bathing. Property was clean and well stocked. Couch is looking a bit worn, bed was very comfortable.

Conch in Training was the perfect little place for just my husband and I while celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. Not only was it within walking distance to everything, but remote enough that we weren't disturbed by the hustle and bustle of Key West. We spent a lot of time on the spacious back deck. Beautiful weather and no bugs come a long way when you are outside trying to enjoy a romantic breakfast. Or just reading a book while enjoying the beautiful weather. The bed and the couch was very comfortable. They've also got a nice selection of books to borrow while staying there. It was so nice to have a washer and dryer in the condo. Especially when we only packed a carry on for the week. The kitchen and sitting area were a little small, but perfect for just two people. I wouldn't recommend staying there if you have a family of three or more. The only complaints I had were a few. The bath tub took a while to drain after taking a shower. I hate standing ankle deep in water while taking a shower. Another complaint was that we had ants all in the kitchen. At first we thought they were knats, they were so small, then looked closer and realized they were ants working themselves up behind the cabinet to the left of the microwave where all the spices were located. And third, we tried to enjoy the community pool. But because it was constantly being used by the older people who live there, the scum around the edges of the pool was disgusting. I'm not sure how often the pool is cleaned, but it needs to be done more often, as much sun screen was left to cake on the tile. Needless to say, we only went to the pool once during the whole week, and it was at 10 minutes tops at that. I'd definitely recommend staying here, especially with the location. Right in the middle of everything. A few blocks over from Duvall Street. 10 minutes one way and your at Mallory Square. 15 minutes the other and your over by the Southern Most Point.

We were within walking distance to all of the key tourist sights in Key West. We were also within very close walking distance of the pool.
