Property Description

En Plein Air is a property that was purchased by the owners for its heritage and natural light. An artist lives here in this former general store. Recently renovated, it remains sympathetic to its 1880s roots. All the rooms have ceiling fans and air conditioners. Modern conveniences include a new swimming pool that is considered substantial compared to other residential ones in the neighbourhood.

Elgin Lane is close to Southard Street, Fleming Street and Francis Street. It is a brief walk to casual and fine dining, coffee shops, Duval Street and the Historic Seaport. Three clay flowerpots define the frontage. There is space to park scooters. The entry has a deep covered porch and wicker chairs with a floral pattern on the cushions that complement the red shutters on all the windows.

The ground floor is open concept. The front section flows into a dining area and then the kitchen that looks out to the backyard. There are windows on all sides of the house. Plantation shutters in the living room and venetian blinds elsewhere provide privacy.

The living space is well equipped with leather chairs, a rattan sofa that conceals a queen-size hide-a bed, a wall mounted television with cable and a sizeable drop-leaf coffee table. An art collection of local artists completes the d├ęcor. Like other Key West residences, this one is also built with Dade County Pine, a dense variety that is dark in colour. Unlike other island houses where previously 'painted over' walls are sanded to return to the natural beauty of the wood; the process of stripping back the layers of paint was stopped-at a point that reveals the wood and layers of paint colours-like the multi coated history the home has worn. The effect is a conversation piece.

Flanked by the living space and kitchen is the dining area. The tall buffet and hutch (and the entry armoire) are reminiscent of the time when the store was the first stop for provisions upon arrival in the harbour. The white kitchen is located at the back of the house with views of the pool from both the original crank-type casement windows and the French doors. The owners are both recreational chefs. The kitchen is thoroughly equipped and there is substantial storage.

Outside the French doors, the deck spreads across the back of the house. A new table and chairs, chaise lounge and red gas barbecue accompany the asymmetrical shaped pool. It is five feet four inches deep, has curved bench seating with four body jets, a salt chlorinator, three waterspouts and a heater.

The entire yard is surrounded by palm trees with massive fronds that offer shade in different corners of the garden throughout the day. Access to the backyard is also possible from the walkway at the side of the house that has ample width for bicycle storage. There is a ground floor powder room with a pedestal sink. A niche holds a large capacity, frontloading washer and dryer made by LG.

The second story is accessed from an open staircase off the kitchen/dining area and leads to a spacious upstairs hallway. The generous white bathroom has a tub with rain shower, two Zen-style bowl sinks and mahogany storage shelves. The cabinet for the sinks is a painted Dade County Pine cabinet that belonged to the general store. The make-up mirror, shower baskets, towel bars, and train style towel rack have a brushed nickel finish.

The back bedroom overlooks the garden. This area has a queen-size bed, six-drawer dresser, matching mirror and a television. There is a lighted, walk-in closet with double hang closet rods on each side.
On the landing, before entering the front bedroom, trompe l'oeil ceramic cushions-purchased from a neighborhood antique store-belonged to a prominent American writer. A king-size bed was purchased for this large space that has capacity for a desk and ergonomic office chair. There is a six-drawer dresser, a television and the same walk in closet configuration as the back bedroom. The compact office area is a good place for seclusion, but the high-speed wireless Internet connection is equally strong while sitting at the patio table or on the lounger beside the swimming pool.

Rental of this home includes a mid-stay cleaning paid for by the owners. To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the office in advance for details.
