Property Description

Looking for an ideal vacation? This charming three-bedroom, three-bath home is the perfect getaway spot. The style? A classic Key West eyebrow with two saw-tooth additions and plenty of Dade County pine. The story? The name "Maximo Cabana" commemorates Maximo Diaz, who bought the house in the 1940s to lure his wife Laura back to Key West from Cuba. His plan worked. Now it's your turn to relax in the sun-filled rooms with vaulted ceilings, to enjoy the elegant and comfortable furniture, the private outside oasis featuring a stunning thirty-six-foot saltwater pool, and plenty of space for the outdoor living you came to the Keys to enjoy.

Maximo Cabana's street view reflects its stately, peaceful neighborhood: trees, picket fences, landscaped yards, restored homes, and houses that have stood for decades. The location is just blocks from Duval, with easy access on foot or bike to the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico sides of the island. If you prefer a car, this place offers a Key West rarity: dedicated parking and for not one car but for two. If you like to eat out, you're near some of the island's best: Little Pearl, Mangia Mangia, Michaels, Seven Fish.

Once you cross the sidewalk and pass through a white picket fence, you'll follow the brick walkway up to the front porch, where there's abundant space to sit or swing while reveling in the neighborhood's green tranquility. Past the front door you'll enter a living room, classic and contemporary, that fans out to the left. Mahogany floors start here and provide the lovely hardwood ambience through most of the house. Light colored walls and plenty of windows and doors guarantee ambient light. A comfy couch and multiple deep-cushioned chairs center the conversation area with lamps, coffee table, and a unique framed display of antique doorknobs. Watch TV here or read those books you brought or page through the scrapbook that commemorates the house's appearance on In a Fix. For architecture and history buffs, pictures show how new flooring was installed and drywall removed to expose the coveted Dade County pine. AC, multiple TVs, WiFi, cable, stereo, and a DVD player are all at your fingertips.

One saw-tooth addition houses the formal dining area and the other a study and kitchen. The dining room features a gorgeous, handmade bottle chandelier that adds character to the area and lights the farmhouse-style dining table below. The study and kitchen each open to the outside. With the open floor plan, the minute you enter the house, you see the pool, deck, and lush garden area out back.

The kitchen takes excellent advantage of space and adds modern functionality, supplying every amenity you could desire for meal preparation. If you're like most people, you'll also want to cook on the outside grill and serve your meal at the al fresco dining table that seats six or more. Since the table is tucked under a covered veranda, unexpected warm rain showers will not interrupt your party. In fact, you can lounge outside to await the inevitable rainbow. The expansive stone deck continues out from the veranda, surrounded by lush foliage that creates beauty and total privacy. By island standards, the inviting heated pool is very large. Still there's plenty of deck left for lounging in deck chairs and contemplating your good luck in renting Maximo Cabana. You'll definitely want to come back here next year.

One of the three doors opening on the deck leads to the master bedroom. Inside, bedside tables and lamps flank the king bed. There's also generous space to store folded and hanging clothes. The beds here and in the other first-floor bedroom combine firmness with comfort and a pile of soft pillows that promise a great night's sleep. The mood is tranquil and relaxing. The master bedroom's en suite bath features two sinks, storage space, and a dramatic stained-glass piece. A second full bath opens into the hall and the second bedroom, which offers a queen bed and impressive storage.

A hardwood staircase leads to the second story, where you'll find a full bath, a queen bedroom, and a separate reading nook complete with full daybed that could easily serve as another sleeping spot. Along with the stained glass, some other decorative themes continue here: ceiling fans, plentiful windows, soothing neutral paint choices, splashes of colorful art and bedding, and hardwood floors.

For sure, Maximo Cabana's living space is delightful, but the rest of the 33040 zip code also waits. Duval Street is your gateway to tours, museums, shops, drag shows, and a plethora of restaurants and bars, most offering Happy Hour specials. Maybe take a Conch Train Tour, a Historic Key West self-guided walking tour, or a bike tour to get a better idea of the island geography. If the arts and entertainment interest you, Key West offers music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more.

Or maybe you're more a water sports fan. Visit the Historic Seaport to find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing, and other on-the-water activities. Don't miss the spectacular sunset celebrations at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals applaud as the sun dips below the horizon. If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center will help make sure you don't miss anything.
