Permuda Island Reserve

Permuda Island Reserve is a protected coastal nature area located in Stump Sound just west of Topsail Island in Onslow County, North Carolina. The island stretches about 1.5 miles in length and includes roughly 63 acres of upland habitat surrounded by productive estuarine waters. The reserve is part of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve system, which protects important natural areas for research, education, and low-impact recreation.

Permuda Island is a protected natural reserve located in Stump Sound, and it does not have designated hiking trails, boardwalks, or visitor facilities. Access to the island is by boat, kayak, or paddleboard only, and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the reserve mainly from the water.

The island features a diverse mix of salt marsh, tidal flats, shrub thickets, and former agricultural fields. Vegetation includes live oak, red cedar, yaupon, silverling, and coastal grasses. These habitats provide an important refuge for wildlife while supporting the surrounding estuary, which serves as a nursery for fish, shrimp, crabs, clams, and oysters. Birdwatchers may spot egrets, herons, black skimmers, sandpipers, willets, and American oystercatchers throughout the marshes and shoreline.

Permuda Island was protected in the 1980s after conservation groups and local residents worked to stop a proposed condominium and marina development. Today the island remains permanently preserved, helping protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and the natural coastal environment of the greater Topsail Island region.
