Cana Island Lighthouse
Discover the Cana Island Lighthouse in Door County
The Cana Island Lighthouse is one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in Door County, Wisconsin. Perched on the Lake Michigan shoreline near Baileys Harbor, it has been guiding ships since 1869 and is now one of the county’s must-visit historic sites. Cana Island Lighthouse is not just a historical site it’s an experience. The walk across the causeway, the climb to the top, and the lake views make it one of the most memorable stops in Door County.
The Cana Island Lighthouse is in Baileys Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin and built in 1869. The lighthouse is 89 feet tall (about 97 feet above Lake Michigan’s surface) Made of Cream City brick, later covered with steel to protect it from harsh lake weather Tthe light continues to guide ships today
Visiting the Cana Island Lighthouse
The Causeway Walk getting to the lighthouse is half the adventure. Cana Island sits just offshore, connected to the mainland by a narrow, rocky causeway. Depending on water levels, visitors either walk across shallow water or take a tractor-pulled wagon ride provided by the Door County Maritime Museum.
The Lighthouse Tower
Visitors can climb the 97 steps of the spiral staircase to the top for panoramic views of Lake Michigan, the rocky shoreline, and surrounding forests. On clear days, the view stretches for miles and really shows why the lighthouse was so critical for navigation.
Keeper’s Quarters & Grounds
The original keeper’s house and outbuildings have been restored and serve as a museum, offering a glimpse into the daily life of 19th-century lighthouse keepers and their families. Artifacts, photos, and exhibits tell the story of Door County’s maritime past.
Open Season
Typically May through late October (weather dependent) with a small admission fee that supports the Door County Maritime Museum. The grounds are fairly accessible, but the lighthouse tower requires climbing steep stairs. Early morning for fewer crowds, or late afternoon for stunning light over Lake Michigan.
