JOHN SMITHS 3 BEDROOM 3 BATH HOUSE with South Shore ocean views

Rental Overview
 3 Bedroom(s) 3 Bathroom(s)   Sleeps 3 - 6

Property Information
Our totally renovated three bedroom 3 bath family home is located on the fabled South Shore Road in Smiths Parish, an easy 15 minute stroll to John Smiths Bay. John Smiths Bay is a well kept local secret- a quiet beach with deep soft pink sands that slope into quiet waters without the buffeting of heavy wave action or undertows. Locals like to take huge picnic baskets to the beach in the early evening when all the tourists have disappeared back to their hotels: dinner is served on a blanket on the sand as the sun goes down and the stars come out. You’ll meet some very pleasant well-fed neighbors if you choose to join them, bobbing about like corks in the gentle swells at the end of the day. Smiths Parish is adjacent to the Hamilton Parish enclave of the rich and famous in Tuckers Town- you’ll enjoy touring this area with its magnificent homes, vast wooded hills and the sweeping golf courses. The house is a quaint cottage that has been extensively renovated with all new windows, new shutters, new doors, new kitchen/dining and bay window, all 3 bathrooms completely redone. Master bedroom is good size with a QUEEN BED, bathroom en suite and professionally decorated. Second bedroom smaller, TWIN BEDS, bathroom just outside the bedroom door. Both bathrooms professionally decorated with hairdryers in each bathroom.. Third bedroom has outside entrance – we refer to it as the “cottage” and it is a good size with bathroom and TV and professionally redecorated. The bed is QUEEN SIZED. There is a den/office next to the master bedroom, with a pull-out loveseat which will sleep a child or smaller teenager. There is a DSL line here and a fax machine, TV and DVD, as well as a built-in desk on wall opposite window for guests to have their laptop, do paperwork etc. There are telephones in all 3 bedrooms, den/office and kitchen. Living room has TV – and piano, as well as comfortable furniture. Kitchen is totally new with Thermador double ovens, side-by-side refrigerator, Wolf gas 5 burner cook-top, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, Cuisinart food processor, Kitchen Aid mixer, plus all the usual cookware etc. Laundry room is adjacent to kitchen with same cabinetry, washer and dryer and laundry sink. All 3 bathrooms have ceiling light/fan/heater units. All other rooms have ceiling fans and Mitsubishi air conditioning wall units. Round table in dining area can seat up to 8 and the table on porch will seat 6 comfortably. Gas barbecue is located outside kitchen door behind laundry room.. Television: on digital cable and all televisions have the cable box. Garage downstairs: not available for guest use.
Bus stop heading west to Hamilton is just a couple of minutes walk away, across from Watch Hill Park. There is another stop down by Harrington Hundreds Grocery, a fine food emporium, distinguishing themselves further by offering a full delivery service including beer, wine and spirits. Bus stops heading east towards St. George’s or the airport are on our side of South Road, across from Watch Hill Park. John Smith’s Beach is about 10 minute walk from the house. Specialty Inn, a family style restaurant, is just about 5 minutes ride down South Road at the crossroads of South Shore Road and Collector’s Hill. You may see movie stars here too- its down-home atmosphere belies the delicious local fare that is served here. Flatts Village is also about 5 minutes ride away: Rustico, one of the best Italian restaurants on the island is located in the village as is Pizza Chef (delivers). The 1926 Aquarium, small zoo and museum- a delectable small scale exploration of what the island is and has been in the past…The tidal wash under the little bridge at Flatts and the outlet from Harrington Sounds is always interesting to observe. Other good restaurants in the area would include Tom Moore’s Tavern, Ariel Sands and the dining at Pink Beach.
St. Mark’s Anglican church and St. Patrick’s Catholic church also about 5 minutes ride from here on South Road. The South Shore Road in this area heading east toward John Smith’s and Tucker’s Town (Mid Ocean Golf Club) is relatively quiet as it’s not a major through road, so it’s great for walking along the coastal road admiring ocean views at every turn. Spittal Pond Nature Reserve is only 5 minutes walk from the house and is an extraordinary park in that migratory birds flock to the marsh, sunk between the coastal hills and the ridge along which the South Road meanders. The quiet is absolute and the collection of native species means that you have a feel for what the original settlers experienced when they arrived- the low palmetto trees, the bay grape plants, the scent of deep vegetation underfoot, and the flowers scrambling up into the sunlight. The coastline here is quiet wild- rock pools and crashing waves, driftwood and the reefs clearly apparent above the swells. Bring stout shoes, drinks and sunscreen and go exploring! If you enjoy hiking, pick up the Davidson tour book featured on the website. Bermuda has an Arboretum ,a Botanical Garden to investigate and no end of fascinating out of the way areas most visitors never get to see….There are PLENTY of taxis at the airport- we have a few we like to refer you to because they have provided exceptional services to guests in the past- just ask us to refer you on to them.. Tell driver that the house is on South Shore, Smith's, short distance past John Smith's Beach . You don't need to use phone cards. Use the house phone – the rates are listed in the house information package. It's actually cheaper in Bermuda. The house doesn't get good cell reception anyway.
You can actually get bus/ferry passes at the information desk at the airport, but the owners kindly leave some at the house - enough to get everyone to town for the first time. Then they can be purchased at the Bus Terminal or the Ferry Terminal on Front Street.
You do not need to worry about having to purchase water, but we do try an conserve - no long showers, don't leave water running etc. As far as electricity is concerned, the air conditioning is the big ticket item. While we need it in the summer, it can be kept under control. Shut off the units in the kitchen and living room at night and the office. Units can be left on in the bedrooms and kitchen during the day on the "dry" cycle and the air circulates throughout the house. Then turn up to the "cool" cycle when it isn't cool enough in the bedrooms. The "dry" cycle goes on and off and keeps it just nice. You want to be comfortable but putting all units high will run the bill up.
Paper towels etc . are all at the house and available at the grocery store as well. We also leave some general drug store items, such as band aids etc.in the cabinets. The house is well supplied and everything is available in Bermuda. The Harrington Hundreds Grocery store is a 5 min. walk from the house. The owners have written out an information package and hope to have covered everything and left a bunch of brochures/maps etc. - but you can always get any more information at the various tourist kiosks around the island. Tennis courts can be reserved at Grotto Bay Resort. Pomander Gate Tennis Club in Paget offers temporary memberships to visitors for $35 for the week. Courts can be booked Mon-Fri in mornings and possibly early afternoons which are non-peak times for the regular members.
We have a property manager who will run errands for you but please note: his charges are ABOVE AND BEYOND the rental rates. If you leave belongings behind or want to arrange something extra to be delivered to the house, you will be presented with a bill for his hourly rates and services and it will be paid in cash on the spot, or deducted from your damage deposit. Please note this house requires a leases, a deposit that includes a refundable $1,000.00 a week damage security payment and the balance paid in full one month prior to the tenancy commencing. Rented in conjunction with C56 which is another 3 bedroom house nearby, a large family re-union or special event can be accommodated.
