Property Description

With its private gardens and patio, the house offers a very generously sized space for the great comfort of up to 6 persons. Nearby is Devonshire Bay where fresh fish can be purchased, and the remnants of an ancient fort can be explored. There’s great snorkeling here as well!

Nearby attractions would include the family dining facilities at Collectors Hill and South Shore Road. There are grocery, pharmacy and pub facilities there as well as two churches. Palm Grove Gardens and the Botanical Gardens are extra attractions within walking distance.

The nearby Verdmont Museum is a must see if you want to walk the lovely rooms of a bygone era and gain insight into how people lived in the 1700’s. The furnishings, wall treatments, floor coverings and furniture are beautiful and the collection of children’s toys is wonderful. The views across the coastal southern shore are breathtaking and the gardens with their medicinal herbs and fruit trees are lovely. For those intrigued by nature reserves with birds, heavy vegetation and the crashing of waves on rocky shores, Spittal Pond Nature Reserve is a hike you won’t forget. The path wends through dense tropical undergrowth, past a salt marsh (with any luck – filled with migrating water birds), and up the ridge to see the Atlantic rollers pounding in on the black rocks and refilling the rock pools with small fish and crabs. The quiet there is complete- and the scent of damp earth, vegetation and clean ocean air is like perfume… This is as close to what Bermuda was like before people stumbled upon it 500 years ago as one is likely to experience… In the right season, whales pass by on their stately annual migrations.

On the bus heading east, you are at John Smith’s Bay in less than 10 minutes. This is a dazzling south shore beach, with deep water, gentle surf and flawless pink and white sands and great snorkeling. John Smith’s is the local’s favorite beach. Join them in the evening with your picnic basket and relax as the sun goes down and the cool of the night sweeps away the heat, swimming at dusk as the stars come out.

Over in Flatts Village you can enjoy lunch or dinner or ice-cream before or after you watch the interesting tidal torrent pour through the narrows under the bridge, along with its full complement of leaping small boys and girls. The 1926 Aquarium is right there at the bridge with its delightful collection of fish, birds and turtles and an absorbing series of displays demonstrating the geological origins of the island, the whaling industry, deep sea diving, underwater treasure discoveries and so. A small facility, it suits baby legs very nicely: toddlers aren’t overwhelmed with vast distances to cover and older folks appreciate the surprisingly good gift shop and the friendly staff. You can dine at Rusticos or Indigo right afterwards or at the Pizza shop which also makes the most delicious fish sandwiches.

All these delights including the golf course of Ocean View and Tuckers Point Resort are within 8 miles of your accommodations – and then there’s all the rest of the island to see! St.Georges is 20 minutes away by bus, and Naval Dockyard a mere 20 minutes by ferry from Hamilton… and beach after beach in between, all up the South Shore Road from Elbow Beach to Church Bay- and beyond. Don’t forget Harbour Nights either: come to town and meet the locals at the Front Street marketplace for the best of local food, arts and crafts and talent on Wednesday nights, from May to October.
