Built in 1937 by Bermuda’s most famous architect, Wil Onions and his esteemed associate the landscape designer Val Bouchard, the 5 chimneyed one level home is built in the handsome style of stone homes crafted 300 years ago. The utterly private estate enjoys 900 feet of pristine shoreline with not another house in sight and views from St. Georges to Somerset Bridge. The quiet green and blue waters of the private cove are 4 feet deep at the stone step access point from the dock. From there you swim out to the sunbathing raft anchored off shore for a nap in peace and tranquility....
On the broad dock there is a full array of umbrellas, tables and chaises where you can barbecue, read a book and relax with a glass of wine.
The beautiful house is furnished with an exceptional collection of antiques. Offered are five beautifully appointed guest rooms to accommodate you and your guests.
The antique 4 poster bed in the primary bedroom has a fireplace and ocean views over the stone terrace .The second bedroom is furnished with a double bed, and an antique sofa. Both rooms have closets, chest of drawers and all the pretty details of a vintage home. Both rooms have uninterrupted ocean views. The third bedroom with its ensuite bath features a double bed and charming garden vistas. The remaining bedroom is the master with Queen bed and ensuite bath, and a second family room with a flat screen TV and a rollout sofa. There is an apartment at the end of the house which constitutes the 5th. bedroom. It has 2 large single beds in it.
Nearby attractions would include the charming hamlet of Somerset with grocery stores, post office, restaurants and nice shops all a leisurely 15 minute walk away. There is the additional advantage of immediate access the fabled Railway Trail- a paved carriageway restricted to mopeds, bicycles and pedestrian traffic only, extending through much of the island and connecting with parks and points of interest. Naval Dockyard, is about 10 minutes away by bus or ferry and features an exceptional collection of stone, brick and iron buildings built in the very early 1800’s to re-provision British naval vessels. Meticulously restored, these buildings now house comprehensive museums, art galleries, artist’s workshops, pretty shops, cafes and pubs as well as theatre and nightclub activity. The views from the Commissioners House are from end to end of the entire island- stupendous.
The ferry stops at Carvelho Bay and Somerset Bridge (where you can rent a little boat or perhaps go deep sea fishing…see website homepage) and goes on to Dockyard and into Hamilton: schedules can be consulted via the link at www.bermudarentals.com homepage. The closest sandy beach would be Somerset Long Bay, about 20 minutes walk away. All the fabled beaches of the south shore stud the coastline as you meander eastwards towards Hamilton on the bus or on your moped. Church Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Jobson’s Cove, Stonehole Bay, Warwick Long Bay and Astwood Cove, Elbow Beach and many others await you…each dazzlingly beautiful…
The bus stop: there is one right outside of the property and it runs twice a.m. and twice early afternoon. At another bus stop nearby the bus runs every 15-20 minutes. The walk to this bus stop is approximately 10 minutes.
The driveway is on an incline from the street down to the house at almost water-level. There are gentle steps, 6 inch rise, installed to make the walk up to the road easier for anyone with concerns over walking up the driveway.
