The Northeast Kingdom offers single track and double track trails, and roads that date back to the times of horse-drawn carts. These miles of scenic beauty are ideal for walking, biking, and skiing.
Kingdom Trails manages and maintains an extensive network of recreational trails, appropriate for the casual explorer and enthusiast alike. Kingdom Trails is a charitable non-profit organization working in partnership with private landowners, local businesses and government, as well as other organizations to create, preserve and protect trails.

Burke Mountain offers a variety of outdoor recreational activity. The camp ground is open during the summer months, and provides bathroom and shower facilities. Or if you prefer a scenic drive, the toll road is also open throughout the warm season. The winter brings skiing and snowboarding, and for beginners, there are lessons available in the Snow Sports Learning Center.
The heavy snows, unique location and geography, as well as a 2,000 foot vertical glade system at Jay Peak Resort in northern Vermont make for excellent skiing during the winter months. Lessons are also offered here. In the summer, play a round at Jay Peak Championship Golf course.

ATV riding and snowmobiling are surging in the Northeast Kingdom. There are miles of trails to explore, provided through a network of leadership, land stewardship, partnerships and collaboration among clubs and landowners. The Vermont All Terrain Vehicle Sportsman's Association is a statewide association of ATV clubs that works in partnership with the state of Vermont, developing and managing the trail system. The North Country ATV Club of New Hampshire similarly manages trails in our neighboring state. During the winter months, snowmobiling offers abundant wildlife sightings, mountaintop vistas, as well as a receptive network of dealers, restaurants and stores. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers provides organization and support to snowmobile clubs.
The rugged landscape of the Northeast Kingdom, with its dense woods, jagged lakes, and hidden ponds is ideal for hunting and fishing. The low population density allows wildlife of all kinds to flourish. Those looking for trout, salmon, and bass will find it here. Small game hunters will find rabbit, squirrel, quail, and crow. Or if you prefer bigger game, the land is traveled by deer, bear, turkey, and moose, as well as bobcat, fox, raccoon and coyote. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department manages wildlife, fisheries, habitat, education and rescue.
The above are only a sampling of what Island Pond and the Northeast Kingdom have to offer. You can also find activities such as bird watching, boating, gardening, golfing, hiking, and swimming, among other things!
