Geography/History

Fort Myers Beach is a town situated on the barrier island of Estero Island. The town is about seven miles long, has an approximate population of 7,000 and has about 1.8 million visitors annually. An added bonus: it's just off the coast and in easy reach of the islands of Sanibel and Captiva. In 1914, Leroy Lemoreaux, one of the last known homesteaders to settle onto the island, cleared his land and survived by growing vegetables and fishing. In 1921, a wooden swing toll bridge was the first bridge built, with the toll of 10 cents a person to cross. The hurricane of 1926 destroyed the bridge and severed the slim neck of land attaching San Carlos to the mainland making it and island. Today, it is called Hurricane Pass.

Tourism

Tourists visit Fort Myers Beach for its beautiful soft, white sand and warm, calm, sparkling waters-without the crazy waves of the Atlantic side. The town is full of all ages of people to share some good conversation with while perusing the cafes, pubs or shops in Times Square. There is plenty to do whether parasailing, boating, fishing or bird watching. Keep an eye out for the pipers, gulls, heron, pelican, sanderling, roseate spoonbill, wood stork and egret. The Matanzas Pass Wildlife Preserve will appeal to history buffs as well as nature-lovers. Being the first aquatic preserve in Florida, it’s also home to almost 60 acres of local plants and animals, including a mangrove forest and a fully restored historical cottage. Bowditch Point Park is an excellent choice for walks and a packed lunch- it covers 16 acres and provides numerous hiking trails and picnic areas. Another place that outdoor enthusiasts enjoy is Lovers Key State Park, where back bays and mangrove forests make for great kayaking and wildlife watching. Renting a power boat, waverunner or taking a fishing charter or a dolphin eco-tour: these are just a few of the more popular activities that visitors have said are their favorite things to do in Fort Myers Beach. Most of all, the concensus is-don't forget to stop to feel the soft white sand between the toes while catching the Fort Meyers sun set over the Gulf.
