Washington Island is Door County’s northernmost getaway located just off the tip of the Door Peninsula. Washington Island is reached only by boat or air making it feel secluded, serene, and special. Here, life moves at an unhurried pace. You’ll find quiet beaches, pastoral landscapes, and quirky attractions that reward those willing to make the journey.
Why Visit Washington Island? It’s quieter and more rural than the mainland towns of door county, think open fields, family farms, and star-filled skies at night. Many visitors come for a day trip, but an overnight stay lets you slow down and see the island without the rush of catching the return ferry. Here is why you should visit Washington Island.
Things to Do on Washington Island
Schoolhouse Beach
One of only a few limestone pebble beaches in the world with smooth, white stones instead of sand. The water is clear and refreshing. Don’t take the stones there is a fine for removing them.
Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm
From late June to early August, fields of purple lavender stretch to the horizon. Visitors can tour the fields, shop for lavender products, and enjoy lavender ice cream.
Mountain Park Lookout Tower
Climb 186 wooden steps for sweeping views of the island and surrounding watersJacobsen Museum
A tiny log cabin filled with artifacts from island history, shipwrecks, and Native American culture.
Stavkirke
A striking Norwegian-style stave church built by island residents in the 1990s—beautifully detailed and set in the woods.
Washington Island Art & Nature Center
Part art gallery, part nature education hub fun for everyone.
Getting There
The adventure begins before you even arrive. To reach Washington Island, most travelers drive to Northport Pier at the tip of the peninsula. Take the Washington Island Ferry which is a 30-minute ride across Death’s Door passage (named for its treacherous history). Bring your car, bike, or motorcycle to the island which is 35 square miles, so having transportation helps.
