Door County Lighthouses

Door County Wisconsin Lighthouse Tour on Lake Michigan

Cana Island Lighthouse on Lake Michigan in Door County Wisconsin

With 300 miles of shoreline, Door County has long relied on lighthouses to guide ships through the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Today, the peninsula is home to 11 historic lighthouses, many of which are open for tours, making it one of the best regions in the Great Lakes for lighthouse enthusiasts.

Guided tours and annual lighthouse festivals offer a chance to step inside these maritime landmarks, climb their towers, and learn about the keepers who once maintained them. Some, like Cana Island Lighthouse near Baileys Harbor, are among the most photographed in Wisconsin. Others, such as Chambers Island or Plum Island lighthouses, can only be reached by boat and provide a more adventurous experience.

Each lighthouse has its own story  from the picturesque Eagle Bluff Lighthouse overlooking Ephraim and Peninsula State Park to the remote Sherwood Point Lighthouse, the last manned station on the Great Lakes. Whether you explore by car, bike, or boat, visiting Door County’s lighthouses is both a journey into maritime history and a chance to see some of the peninsula’s most scenic views.

Suggested Lighthouse Itinerary

Day 1 (Sturgeon Bay & Southern Door): Visit Sturgeon Bay Canal North Pierhead Light (walk the pier). Stop by Sherwood Point (view from a distance). Explore downtown Sturgeon Bay for dinner.

Day 2 (Peninsula State Park & Baileys Harbor): Morning: Tour Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park. Afternoon: Head to Baileys Harbor Range Lights and hike The Ridges Sanctuary. Evening: End the day at Cana Island Lighthouse for sunset.

Day 3 (Northern Door & Islands): Take the ferry to Washington Island. On the way, spot Pilot Island Lighthouse. Join a boat tour to Plum Island Rear Range Light if available. For adventurous travelers: Arrange a trip to Chambers Island Lighthouse.

Late spring through fall most lighthouses close in winter. Early morning or golden hour provides the best light. Door County Maritime Museum hosts a Lighthouse Festival twice a year (June & September), offering rare access to normally closed sites like Chambers and Sherwood Point. Visiting Door County’s lighthouses is more than sightseeing it’s stepping into the maritime history that shaped the peninsula.

*Several local companies offer lighthouse cruises (e.g., Door County Lighthouse Cruises out of Gills Rock and Fish Creek).
