Lookout Mountain is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a little bit over an hour from Gatlinburg. It is interesting and educational for both adults and children. With much the same natural scenic beauty and outdoor adventures as the Smokies, the historical caverns, rock formations, and railway cars, make Lookout Mountain and surrounding areas unique.
Lookout Cavern, also known as Cavern Castle, is the replica of a fifteenth-century Irish castle. Upon visiting, you are transported hundreds of feet underground to witness the breathtaking result of earthquakes. Ruby Falls, on the other hand, is a 145-foot waterfall over 1,000 feet underground. Here, you can also search for gorgeous, semi-precious stones. At Rock City, visitors can try to pass through challenging pathways of formations supposedly millions of years old. Then, track through the Enchanted Trail, marveling at flora while keeping an eye out for the rare white Fallow deer. Travelers might also love the Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village with displays of popular fairy tales.
Finally, head over to “America’s Most Amazing Mile” at the Incline Railway. A National Historic Site since 1895, you may sit in trolley-style cars that ride to the top of Lookout Mountain. Be aware, it's the steepest passenger railway globally, but something you will never forget. Spend a day or two at Lookout Mountain before you return home from your Smoky Mountain vacation.
