Property Information

Birch Bay is located in the Northwest corner of Washington State. It is about 20 miles north of Bellingham and 100 miles north of Seattle, just off I-5. Vancouver, British Columbia is a mere 40 miles to the north. Birch Bay has the warmest waters north of California and is definitely worth a visit. Being in the northern portion of the Banana Belt, Birch Bay has approximately 25% less rain than Bellingham.

Birch Bay is well known for it's warm shallow water. The beach is just steps away and is a safe place for everyone to explore sea life, build a sand castle, or fly kites. The Bay is also a well know area for bird watchers, bikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

During the summer people come from all over the U.S. and Canada to enjoy the water, sea life, golfing, bird watching, shopping, or just plain relax and enjoy life.

With Mount Baker just a little over an hour away, this makes us a great winter time destination also. Whistler Resort is less than 3 hours to the north over the Canadian boarder. Don’t ski? Come and watch Mother Nature send storms to the area and recreate the seashore.

Birch Bay is a destination for the whole family, with activities for everyone to enjoy.

Property Activities

Outdoor Activities in Birch Bay:

*Crabbing and Clamming

You can easily catch your limit of clams in just a short amount of time. We like to clam in the state park where it’s rocky and loaded with clams. If you are looking for horse clams, just wait for a low tide and go straight out in front of our condo. The crabbing season is short, just mid August through September, but the crab is excellent. You can use pots, rings, or simply walk out onto the beach an pick up your crab as it crawls through the water.

*Sand Castle Building

When the tide is out, the Bay is a great place to build sand castles. You can spend hours creating sand sculptures on the beach and then watch it get washed away as the tide comes back in. During June, the Birch Bay Chamber sponsors a Sandcastle Contest.

*Kite Flying

This is another great low tide activity. Hours of amusement flying kites, or just tie it to your beach chair and watch it dance through the air.

*Swimming

It’s hard to imagine swimming in the ocean in Washington, but this is the place to do it. After a low tide, the ocean water is temporarily heated up to bathtub temperatures by the sun warmed sand as the tide returns. Since the tide flats are so shallow, young swimmers can enjoy a safe place to swim with virtually no undertow.

*Bird Watching

The northwest corner of Washington State offers some of the finest winter bird watching in the country. The natural shoreline areas provide food and shelter to a wide variety of migrating birds during the winter months. There is an annual Birding Festival in early spring. The area is also home to many resident birds like the Great Blue Herons which are seen in the Bay daily. The North Cascades Audubon website has a map of birding locations in Whatcom County.

*Biking

Birch Bay Drive is both scenic and flat making it a great place for biking. Semiahmoo Park is another beautiful area perfect for all levels of bikers with its flat, paved trail. More experienced bikers can take a beautiful ride from our condo to Semiahmoo, down to Ferndale, or even as far as Chuckanut drive in Bellingham.

*Kayaking

Birch Bay is shallow and stays relatively calm so it is a great place for all levels of kayakers. During high tides, you can kayak up Terrell Creek towards Birch Bay State Park. My favorite time to kayak is in the evening when the water is usually very calm and the sun is beginning to set.

*Boating/Fishing

Birch Bay State Park has a public boat launch, as well as does Blaine Marina, which also has Salmon Charters.

*CShop

A landmark in Birch Bay having just celebrated their 35th year, everyone seems to know the CShop. If you don’t yet, you soon will. Famous for handmade chocolate and baked goods, ice cream, snow cones and everything else yummy this place will have you begging for more. Located just a short walk down the bay. They used to be operate just May-September, although this year they have continued to be open on the weekends.

*Water Slides

Birch Bay Waterslides provide great water activities. They have slides, spiraling tubes, a long straight drop for the fearless, and an area for small children. They do not allow food to be taken in the park, but you may get your hand stamped for re-entry and go to your car or the pizza place in the parking lot. They also have a snack bar in the park. Open Memorial Day-Labor Day.

*Birch Bay State Park

This is the place to go clamming. A nice rocky shoreline and loaded with the little tasty treats. Take your bucket and shovel for a great appetizer. Don’t forget your clamming license which is available at the Bay Market. There are nice BBQ pits here as well as a large grassy area to play Frisbee, etc. Public boat launch is located at the far end of the park.

*Golfing

Two of Washington’s top public golf courses are located in the Birch Bay area. Semiahmoo and Loomis Trail are both award winning 18-hole courses. Two other golf courses nearby are Dakota Creek and Grandview Golf Course in Custer. Sea Links Golf Course which has just been redone and newly opened is within one block of our condo!

*Miniature World

Mini Golf, Go-Carts & Train Rides. This is a fun place for children and adults to spend some time. Located just about a mile from our place – a quick drive or nice walk. Go-carts and mini golf operate during the warmer months. The train rides so all summer, and a very popular Santa Train runs during the holiday season. The train runs through a winter wonderland of over a million lights and ends with a visit to Santa.

*Outdoor Sculpture

The Peach Arch Park features an annual International Sculpture Exhibition on Display from May 1st through October 1st. Parking is free at the Peach Arch State Park.

*Historic Plover Ferry

This is the oldest foot passenger ferry in Washington State. It was the originally used to shuttle cannery workers from Blaine to the Alaskan Packers Salmon Cannery on Semiahmoo Spit. It now carries a small number of passengers on a scenic tour between Blaine Harbor and the Semiahmoo Resort on weekends during the summer. This is a very fun ride for the kids as they let them steer the boat and then give them a certificate for having been a Captain of the Plover Ferry. It seems like a very short route, but the actually tour around Drayton Harbor for a bit. Fares by Donation.

*Spa

If you are here to relax and pamper yourself, there are 3 spas in the area. The new Sandcastle resort has recently opened just a few doors down from our place. They have a spa in the hotel which offers a variety of services. Semiahmoo resort is about 10 minutes away. They have a large spa which is very nice. Silver Reef Casino also has a new spa which I have not yet been to.

*Casinos

The Silver Reef Casino offers video slots and table games, dining, and spa. They are located 10 miles south in Ferndale, off exit 260.

*Wineries

Dakota Creek Winery is my favorite. Located in Blaine on Haynie Road. This is a small family run winery that is great fun. Go for wine tasting and a tour of the wine cellar.

Testimonials

The condo was a wonderful place to relax, and enjoy being together. It is set up for kids, with video games, videos, DVD's, board games, and beach toys, etc. Situated right across the street from the beach, it was nice to be able to walk right out on

the patio, and see if the tide was in or out. There is so much to do for families in Birch Bay, and the condo made it a comfortable stay. It is thoughtfully

appointed, and full of wonderful beach-themed knick knacks that make you feel right at home. 06/29/08

We were in the area for a golf tournament and were very pleased with the proximity of the condo to the two golf courses. The unit was nicely appointed, very comfortable and met our every need. Would not hesitate to use it again in the future. Give it a try!

We had an awesome time and equally awesome weather. The condo is tastefully decorated in a nautical theme and is well stocked with all of the comforts of home. It is just a short walk to the beach and has a wonderful view from the back patio. We hope to return soon! Thanks Karen for everything.

 Camille, Wenatchee, WA.

We had a fabulous time staying at the condo in Birch Bay! There is a breathtaking view of the bay from the patio. The condo itself is very well decorated and fully equipped with just about anything you can think of. The indoor pool is one of the best we've ever used. It was very clean and surprisingly warm as well. There are many things to do nearby, but we chose to stay planted and enjoy lots of family time playing games, watching movies, swimming, and walking along the beach. We will definitely recommend this condo to our friends and family. We plan to stay in the condo again sometime soon.

My stay at this Birch Bay condo. was so pleasant and peaceful. All the amenities were near by, the community was friendly, and the condo was perfect for some R&R, the view was good, every necessity was provided and a great spa was just down the road. Super beach, not crowded when I was there. The condo owners were extremely pleasant and easy to work with. GREAT STAY. I plan to bring the grandkids back up. Thanks!

 Connie, Sandpoint Idaho

Thank you so much for the use of your beautiful condo. We had 4 adults and 2 children, and had plenty of room. I was very pleased with how clean and updated your place was. All the movies and video games were a treat for the kids late at night. The pool, hot tub & raquetball were wonderful. The beach was just spectacular, low tide was waaaay out there. Loved that we could take a short walk to nice restaurants, the little grocery store, espresso, and liquor store. Driving down the road was so scenic and the State Park is right there at the end. We had a wonderful time. We plan to come back again. Thank you, Karen.

 Tracy, Stielacoom, WA

Took my two children, 2 and 10 years old, to your property while my husband stayed home to recover from some minor surgery. It was a fantastic stay for us! The right amount of space, perfect little view to remind you that you're "at the beach", perfect little courtyard for the kids to run, and all of the amenities you can think of. The decor is so nice and fresh, and everything is exceptionally clean. We very much appreciated the collection of kids movies and toys. Thanks a bunch for sharing your space; we loved it!

 Heather, Bellingham, WA

Karen, My two sisters and I like to get away for a girls only week-end every once in a while and your condo worked out perfectly for us. We've stayed in Birch Bay before at other homes, but have to say we enjoyed your condo the most...great location, perfectly decorated for the beach and equipped just like home. We wouldn't suggest you change anything...perfect short get-a-way for those of us in the greater Seattle area.

 Sharon Needham, Port Townsend, WA

Thanks for the use of your condo for the month of January, 2008. We enjoyed our stay even tho the weather was not good. Loved the flooring in the kitchen, etc. An added plus was that you could see the water from the living room sofa. We did miss the eagles this year but saw their nest and one eagle. We especially enjoy the pool. It is definitely a reason to return. Thanks again.

 Nancy, Lansing, MI

Karen,

We had a perfect Christmas at your condo. Everything was well organized with plenty of thoughts, the Christmas tree, the wine bottle... The kids were so happy to find the DVD's. We found everything we needed and we had a great relaxing time. Thanks for sharing the condo.

 Atanas, Vancouver, BC

We would happily recommend this condo to any family. Our kids (5 and 8) were as delighted with it as we were. Everything seemed to have been thought of! Little items that you might not travel with, like sugar and oil, were in the cabinets. When we needed bandaids, they were already there in the bathroom. Maps of the local area were near the phone. Having a washer and dryer was terrific. We had a contest each day on the beach to see who could find the most attractive stones and shells. There were many great blue herons, but also scoters (3 species), harlequin ducks, and wading shorebirds. It was only 15 minutes to Bellingham, where we found the well-stocked natural and organic Food Co-op.

 Morgan Hite, Smithers, BC

This was the first holiday my husband and I along with our two children(2 and4) had gone on in a long time. We couldn't have chosen a more beautful place to stay. From the beach decor to thetoys and videos for the kids, having everything you could possibly need right at your fingertips was so like being at home. We went go carting, shopping, walks and out for the best mexican food-right down the street- that we had ever had. Can't wait to come back next year!!!

Great family geteway!

My wife and our 3 kids all had a great time. The condo is very well furnished: TV in each bedroom and livingroom, Playstation2 and original Nintendo game systems along with plenty of games, dvd player, vcr, many books, dvds and video tapes, extra towels, barbecue in the back, plenty of dishes - basically everything you could think of. The condo is right across the street from the bay, about 3 minutes from the waterslides, go-karts, and putt-putt golf, less than 10 minutes from the Peaceway Arch. All the neighbors were very quiet, and the kids had a great time in the pool - never too crowded!

We had a great time and before the first day was over we all decided that this was going to have to be an annual event for us.
