After a short cozy ferry ride from Portland, you arrive at Diamond Cove, the most protected cove in Casco Bay. You step off the boat into our Marina, and into vacationland. Water views from all over the island! The community of Diamond Cove was once Fort McKinley. It was built between 1891and 1907 to protect Portland Harbor during the Spanish-American war. All homes in this area are the original Queen Anne style buildings built during that time, but are all completely renovated or in the process of renovation. See the privately owned Schoolhouse and Bakery, go duckpin bowling in the renovated bowling alley, play basketball in the gymnasium, pamper yourself with a day at Nine Stones Spa. A paradise for history buffs, Fort Mckinley still has huge batteries and military housing remnants all over the island to see. (These buildings and batteries have been sealed for safety reasons). Other than the van that picks you up at the ferry, or an occasional workman's vehicle, Diamond Cove is a no-car island, making it a wonderful place for families. Most homes surround the parade ground, a huge grassy area perfect for playing. Diamond Cove has something for everyone. So sit back on your porch, relax and take in the views!
