This large elegant Maine beachfront summer house, one both beautiful and comfortable, is in a remote area an hour and 15 minutes northeast of Portland. This is one of only two houses overlooking the flat, wide, mile long white sand beach; the neighboring house, owned by the same family, can be neither seen nor heard. The house was built in the 1930s and the estate is owned by the descendants of the original owners, retaining the property for themselves and their close friends. The house is nestled above the beach, in the middle of a 700 acre conservation area comprised of trails, wetlands, two tidal rivers, and a peak; from the peak one can see an extensive archipelago of islands, a seemingly endless expanse of ocean and, on a clear day, views of snow covered Mt. Washington. The beach is right in front of the estate, ideal for building sand castles, collecting shells or just wandering, alone or with a friend or family member, into the dawn or on towards the sunset.
The house has the ability to sleep 8 people comfortably, with large glass windows facing south. There are two double bedrooms upstairs, and two double bedrooms downstairs, each with its own bath. There are also two small single bedrooms, one of which has its own bath. Many children have grown up in this house, but it is not suitable for 'roughhousing'.
The kitchen has been modernized only with appliances; the rest of the house is as it was in the 1930’s. The large living room has a stone fireplace, and there are both a dining room connected to the living room and a separate dining porch. There are covered and open air terraces and porches both upstairs and down. Bookcases in The Study and throughout the house hold an extensive collection of books: classics, ones for children and books specifically on Maine, as well as many puzzles and games.
This is a property where one arrives and is immediately immersed in another time – a time when people came to Maine to vacation and stayed put in one location, enjoying all it had to offer. It is peaceful – whether you are inside in front of the fire, reading on the deck in the sun, or reveling in the vast spaces outdoors.
Nearby there are available excellent fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers, meats, fish, cheeses, and wine, as well as classic coastal haunts to explore; a quintessential Maine town, about 25 minutes away, has an outstanding museum, a classic and beautiful library, and a variety of fine restaurants.
Most of those who come to stay, come back year after year.
