Property Information
Offering peace, serenity and refuge from
the ordinary world.
Comfortable private rooms and dormitory
quarters situated in a natural forested
30-acre setting near Pahala in the Kau
District of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling "Immutable
Island of Melodious Sound" is a Buddhist
temple and retreat located on 25 acres in
Wood Valley, the Ka'u District of the
Island of Hawai'i. His Holiness the Dalai
Lama has visited and taught here twice.
Many other well known Tibetan lamas of all
lineages are invited yearly to teach
programs open to the public.

Wood Valley Temple, as it is known
locally, has a Guest House with 8 rooms, 3
1/2 baths. It accommodates 15 people or a
small group comfortably. Guest rooms have
an Asian Pacific decor, and original works
of art grace the facility. Quiet, charming
and peaceful - this is a wonderful place
to relax, reflect and meditate. Staying
here is a memorable experience and
everyone is welcome!

Established in 1973 by the Venerable
Nechung Rinpoche, Nechung Dorje Drayang
Ling is a center for the dissemination of
the Buddhist teachings, a place for great
masters to teach and for students to
receive and actualize these instructions
through contemplation and meditation.

Retreats with visiting lamas of all four
lineages of Tibetan Buddhism are conducted
at the temple several times a year. These
programs are on various aspects of
Buddhist philosophy & meditation. Subjects
cover all stages of practice in Buddhist
Sutra and Tantra. From the important
groundwork of correct motivation,
altruistic thought to the relative and
ultimate views of reality, the levels of
practice vary according the person.

The courses are held on weekends, but
often span into the weekdays, and
sometimes month long retreats take place
with 4 sessions a day devoted to
meditation and teaching instruction.
Traditionally, in such gatherings, lamas
give the verbal transmission and
explanation of teachings and practices,
along with bestowing empowerments for
Tantric practices when applicable.

The temple's remote location, its peaceful
surroundings, and the blessings
accumulated from the dozens of great
masters who have taught, prayed and
meditated here, offers a perfect setting
for contemplative retreat, spiritual
training and profound insight.

The retreat and guest house offers a very
special space for individuals and small
groups who want a quiet, peaceful
atmosphere to relax, meditate and reflect
on life. It is an ideal destination for
people to experience rural Hawai'i, away
from the crowded tourist areas and
resorts.

Nestled in an old eucalyptus forest, the
beautifully landscaped grounds are a
natural extension of the environment and
gardens filled with tropical flowers,
plants and exotic fruits.

An early plantation temple that has been
remodeled to serve as a retreat and guest
house, the upstairs has a meditation hall
dedicated to Tara, the female aspect of
enlightenment and activity. The temple and
guest house were dedicated by His Holiness
the Dalai Lama during His first visit in
1980.
