Activities and Special Interests
Welcome to our little corner of the world. Our vacation home is nestled on a two acre piece of heaven, located in the tropical rain forest of Leilani Estates, 22 miles from Hilo and 5 miles from the ocean. The house is 1056 square feet with two bedrooms (each with their own bathroom) and one bathroom that includes an outdoor shower. There is over 600 square feet of covered lanai's. Each bedroom has a small private lanai. The large lanai is furnished with a barbeque, small beverage refrigerator, patio table and chairs, love seat and a couch that converts to a queen size bed. It is a very pleasant spot to stop, sit down and relax. The fully equipped kitchen, breakfast bar and living room are of an open design, with tile floors and bamboo wainscot that compliments the tropical theme found throughout the house. The washer and dryer are located in a separate room off of the lanai. This exceptional new house (built 2005) is very clean, comfortable and relaxing.
The two landscaped acres (shared with our home) are truly a tropical botanical garden. There are over 75 varieties of plants and trees. This includes 11 varieties and over 150 palm trees. There is also numerous edible plants for your pleasure, in season bananas, pineapples, star fruit, etc. For your enjoyment we have provided a plant identification chart. There is also a small natural fish pond.
You are surrounded by the big islands most popular attraction: Madame Pele's handiwork. Volcano National Park entrance is less than one hour away. Lava Tree State Park is within one mile as are several other testaments to the transitional nature of this speck of black rock in the middle of the Pacific. These included thermally heated warm ponds for swimming - 6 miles; the 1955 lava flow that covered the town of Kapoho - 4 miles; the 1990 lava flow that engulfed "The Black Sands Beach" and several homes at Kalapana - 12 miles; the "new" black sands beach - 12 mile drive and 1/2 mile walk; steam vents/natural saunas - 4 miles; and the current ongoing lava ocean entry - 16 mile drive and 4 mile walk.
Other popular "East Side" attractions include Rainbow Falls and the Boiling Pots - Upper Hilo 26 miles; excellent snorkeling at a state marine sanctuary - Kapoho ponds - 8 miles; Akaka Falls - Hamakua Coast 38 miles; Observatories and visitor center - summit of the world's tallest mountain, Mauna Kea - 55 miles; numerous beach parks - Hilo; and miles and miles of scenic and secluded back country roads.
The nearest town in Pahoa. It is a 1960 throw back completed with wooden sidewalks, colorful facades and murals and an atmosphere which fosters alternate life styles. In Pahoa you will find many small restaurants including a Mexican, 2 Italian, 2 Thai, Chinese and 2 local style. There are also 2 bars, a full service market, a natural food store and several funky boutiques.
Golf courses in Hawaii are as varied as the island’s vegetation. At the top end are the course you watch the pros play, Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and Waikola. These great courses are all located on the Kona side and are priced in the $120 to $180 price range. Though spendy, how many chances are you going to get to play the same greens as Palmer, Player and Pavin? Why not be a Tiger? The only difference in the other courses on the Kona side is the price and the notoriety.
The best value is the Wiamea Country Club in Wiamea.
At the other end of the price spectrum and the other end of the island are the “local” courses. My two favorites are the municipal course at Hilo and Volcano Country Club, just past the park entrance.
Hilo Municipal is an 18-hole layout with some very challenging greens. Play your approach shot short and straight, as most holes are hard to reach from the side. Coming from the house take the Kilauea Ave. exit and then left on Haihai St. The green fees are very reasonable.
The 18-hole Volcano Golf Course is on the right of Highway 11 about 2 miles past the park entrance. This fun course gives the golfer a different look on every hole. It is reasonably priced but bring plenty of balls.
Other courses include an excellent 18-hole layout at Waimea, and another at Punaluu. There is a 9 hole course in Hilo on Banyon Drive and one at Discover Harbor toward South Point.
