Property Information
So, you think this can't be true, or its somehow too far away and there's bound to be a catch. Seabird is easy to get to....5 minutes by boat, and it is not only accessible, but affordable. "Your Own Private Island" Seabird Key is a ten acre tropical island hideaway located about one-half mile offshore Marathon in the Florida Keys, USA! We love to point out that the Florida Keys are often referred to as the "American Caribbean." The Keys has that georgous aqua colored water, great fishing, diving, and warm, tropical weather.
When you are a guest of Seabird, you have the entire island to yourself, including a beach house built of exotic hardwoods ( it's the only house on the island) and a 19' runabout to visit the mainland, and to fish, snorkel, explore the back-country, take the kids tubing, or to just have a serene sunset cruise. Seabird's manager is a short boat ride away and is on 24/7 call should you need his assistance in any way. Otherwise, enjoy the total privacy of your own island.
Seabird's house, is fully equipped, sleeps eight, and is furnished with nautical antiques. It feels like it was custom built for Ernest Heminway. The "Old-Florida Style" architecture has a very warm appeal. With multi-level porches and a 35' widow's walk which affords 360 degree ocean views and a spectacular panorama of the bird sanctuary, you can find a number of great spots to actually read your Hemingway novel. Guests who have visited Seabird year after year still write about the stunning beauty of this unique Island home. This cozy retreat has most modern amenities. We are often asked if there is electricity on the island...Well, sure....there is ample electricity, hot water, ceiling fans, Direct TV with a plasma screen, high-speed wireless interenet, fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, etc....... But, who really cares about all of that when you have your own island? It's all there, minus air conditioning. There is no a/c in our perfect Island home. Cypress, wooden louvers with screens open to let the tropical breezes flow just the way the Disney creators of "Swiss Family Robinson" imagined an island experience should be.
How about the beach? A palm shaded, sandy beach complete with all the classic island necessities including hammocks strung between the palms, the "must-have" chickee hut and lounge chairs, beach towels, sun and georgous water........ well, there you go....... a fantasy setting-right out of Bali Hai.
Getting too settled in? Within minutes, you can experience the thrill of snorkeling or scuba diving on some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world. Sombrero Reef is 20 minutes by boat from Seabird's dock. Offshore and back-country fishing are the best to be found anywhere! Read below in the local activities section for more information on what to do in the Marathon & Key West area.

Property Activities
While you and your group will be the only occupants of "Your Own Private Island", our Manager, who lives on the mainland, is available 24/7 to assist you as needed. He will greet you upon arrival at our landbase in Marathon, help you load your gear for the trip out to the Island, give you a brief boating indoctrination while cruising out to Seabird (a five minute ride), help you get settled in and familiar with your home, and then turn the keys to your island home and runabout over to you and return to the mainland.
You're in the Keys! Kick off your shoes, slip into your swimsuit, and take a plunge. America's most dazzling sub-sea sites await your arrival. Enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling at Sombrero Reef, fishing trips, sailing. tubing, biking, private yoga classes, massage therapy, bird watching, photography, and sunset cruises. Island meal services, baby sitting and mid-week cleaning services are also available at an extra charge. Ask to see our special Caribbean menus.
Our guests all love the tranquility and privacy of Seabird Key, as well as the natural beauty of being on your own tropical island, but if you're looking to explore the Keys..... The local coral reefs and offshore and back country (Everglades) fishing is legendary (bonefish, tarpon, permit, sailfish, wahoo, snapper, grouper) and is ranked as the best in the world. Other popular attractions include the Dolphin Research Center (swim with the dolphins), sunken ship artificial reefs, and the attractions of Key West, an hour's drive away. In Key West, you will not want to miss Margaretiville, Jimmy Buffet's store filled with fun Keys trinkets and music. Another favorite is the Old Turtle Krawls restaurant and bar. Its like the Key West you remember. Laid back and informal with someone usually picking the guitar and trying their best to sing in tune.
The Dolphin Research Center is located on Grassy Key, 5 minutes from Marathon, and is an education and research facility that is home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. The staff at the Dolphin Research Center is dedicated to teaching about the dolphins.
Sombrero Reef offers the some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Keys, and is just 20 minutes by boat from Seabird Key. You might enjoy arriving by boat to the Seven Mile Grill Restaurant either on your way out to Sombrero or on your way back in from the reef. It's casual and they welcome you even if you're in a swim suit with cover-up. They have great local food and its fun to arrive by boat.
The Sombrero Key beach is also great, but most of Seabird's guests find it hard to leave their own private beach. Many who visit the Keys seek out Bahai Honda beach, but again, take a look because it is historic, but you'll find your own beach waiting for you upon return.
We highly recommend taking a bike ride down the old seven mile bridge. Not to worry, it's only one mile long. The old bridge still stands running parallel to the new Seven Mile Bridge. It is designated for pedistrians only. Seabird has a couple of conch cruisers (old fashioned bicycles) that you can load in the back of your car and drive down to the entrance of the old bridge. Whether you walk or ride your bike, its a "not to be missed" activity. You'll find historic Pigeon Key at the end of the old bridge.
Crane Point Hammock is home to the Florida Keys Children's Museum, The adderley Village Historic Site and boasts the Museum of Natural History.
